I think it's very likely he slides to ILB regardless if they take anyone in portal or not

Some of you are shockingly fricking dumb. I just don’t understand how we ever win any games or we even field a team. According to DAILY posts on our fan forum, we have the most useless players and coaches

Not a single person gave a shite about Mehki Wingo last year, FYI

Imo he wull play mire inside linebacker this yr

They can still let him rush the oasser from that spot.

This is what I’d do. Perkins needs to be moved around so the defense never knows where he’s coming from. Many of his sacks and pressures did not come off the edge. Move him around.

He played a lot on the inside this year against mobile QBs. He kinda plays all over anyhow.

No and thank God some of you (you included) are nowhere near LSU as a coach. You don’t move a player who is the best on the team at his position to shore up another position. Good grief.

Penn is a solid thumper. Perkins is better at OLB causing havoc

Just not sure why we are having trouble getting top LB's. I mean LSU has a bunch of quality guys in the NFL at the position. I agree inside LB is the QB of the defense and the last really good we have had was D. White. Not saying we need 3 or 4 D. white's but would be nice to have some good players to rotate for depth. Seems every year : OH ST, UGA, bama pull in 3 to 4 top guys and LSU is lucky to get 2 or 3 good ones in 2 to 3 years. Yet here we are again hoping to pull someone from the portal.

Seems like a bad idea. He’s a great edge rusher that can beat tackles with relative ease and get to the quarterback. Not sure how much of an impact he’d make as an inside backer.

But what do I know, I was only the captain and Mike linebacker of my high school’s freshman and junior varsity team.

Too early to say. We’re not done yet.

Not a lot, apparently. His future is very likely ILB where he can make an impact all over the field with his great instincts/athleticism. He's undersized for what you're talking about and also teams can easily gameplan for him by isolating and eliminating his threat like TAMU did. They started to catch on at the end of the year.

This. Perkins is NOT a full time Jack LB/Edge. He just isn’t. He’s on the small size for that position and he is a liability up front against the run, as we saw against both A&M and UGA. We can’t rely on him to set that edge consistently and we have guys who are physically better suited to do that.

Perkins will play some snaps there, especially on passing downs, as he did this season. I think we all know that. He will also play on occasion as an OLB when the situation allows, but we don’t use 3 LBs that often. No one does anymore. Because of this, Perkins will also play a lot of ILB, and House will put him in position to be just as disruptive when he’s there.

The OP is stuck in arbitrary notions about static defensive position roles and locked-in schemes. If he paid any attention this season, House doesn’t work like that. O and the “aggressive 4-3” are dead and gone. We played multiple defensive formations and moved guys around constantly. Some of that was due to injuries and depth issues, but some was also to try and create matchups, especially using Perkins. House is known for this.

So even if Perkins plays lot of his snaps at ILB, he’s still going to be moving around and pressuring from different gaps. Go back and watch how House will swap LBs with D Linemen on zone pressures to create confusion on where guys are coming from and who to key on. We got better at disguising what we were doing as the season went on. With an off-season to learn and gain more experience, Perkins will be a disruptive force wherever House lines him up. And again, that will be in multiple positions around the field in a single game.

You should also want Womack to become the disruptive force many expect him to be, and to have him and Perkins playing together. We want multiple difference-makers on the field at the same time. He’s built to play Edge full time and will hopefully lock the starting role down at some point next season.

You’ll probably always see perk coming off the edge, but you also want to see him in a position to make plays when teams decide to add a TE and run the ball. Or more annoyingly he’s end up out in coverage.

I tjink He moves around a lot because that’s what you do with playmakers but eventually he’s gonna take over Baskerville’s roll.

I’d hate to have to sacrifice Harold’s ability off the edge next year to make him play ILB.

Playing in the middle allows Perkins to go sideline to sideline with his speed. He’d make WAY more plays at inside backer.

What? Yes he is a disruptive force when he gets behind the line of scrimmage. Ut so far as a run stuffer he ain’t it. We need someone more like White was.
