The answer is nobody knows
A lot of people thought Wes was a career pitching coach because that's exactly all he did from 2008-2023 between college and MLB. Then at 51 years old took the UGA HC job.

Safe to assume Wes Johnson's success at MLB had something to do with his getting a shot at being a HC in the SEC.
