Kelvin Sheppard has been a huge disappointment. I really think the defense is above standard if he learns to plug gaps rather than letting himself get blocked so easily by guards and tackles 5 and 10 yards down the field from the line of scrimmage.

The Cutrera loss is huge. If the injury is serious, then that's really going to hurt the defense big time. It's a much bigger deal than most people realize, I think.

EDIT: Having our D-linemen constantly hurting their knees doesn't help matters much either.

I think Riley and Coleman have played very well at LB...although Riley has been caught out of position on some key plays.

And what happened to Josh Downs? What's his injury?

See the edited version. I meant to and did mean Linebacker. We are not the Penn State of the SEC when it comes to linebackers.

the defense looks soft. if theyre not missing tackles, theyre getting dragged forward for extra yards. not much headhunting or hard hitting, and just a bunch of jumping around and cheerleading after plays. they look poorly coached.

If you've got an offensive coordinator who's just cashing his checks every week because his offensive philosophy doesn't resemble the antiquated Bo Schembechler style of football that your leader is more comfortable with, and your play calling is being overridden by this ignorant head coach/leader in favor of the old style Big Ten football, than yes, we're in trouble.

The defense is not up to par, but UGA, Aubie, and Arky don't have defenses either. Expect some big shootouts in the next couple of weeks.

Our defensive scheme amplifies the concerns you have highlighted...Chevis wants LBS flying around making plays...our LBs make plays 7 yards down the field....Someone has already mentioned it; why not move Chad back to SS and play Loston at FS? Then you at least have Coleman, Chad and Loston head hunting

MSu completed less than 50% of their passes and they threw 3 interceptions.

It's the offense this year. Defense is playing well enough for us to win.

Yes, against 4 teams that aren't good. One of the 4 might make a bowl. 2 at best.

We're gonna see what this defense is really about in Athens.

The defense has improved somewhat the last few games, nothing to write home about or brag, but I think they will face reality on both sides of the ball in about 2 weeks...its gonna get even uglier...stay tuned, to be continued....

The defense has faced 4 straight spread option type offenses this year and have held their own considering the time of possession they are on the field this year. Spread offenses are the difference in college football.

I recall the Michael Brooks, Eric Hills, and Bradie James types at LB. I recall the Greg Jacksons, Chris Carriers, Tory Jameses, Mark Romans (no, he shouldn't belong with these others, but talent-wise he does), and the LaRon Landrys of the DB's...all of these players were headhunting playmakers with NFL written all over them. I don't need to mention the D-Line, as the last 5 years alone have produced an assembly line of Sunday players - many of whom I saw on Fox and CBS today.

Some might call me stupid for saying this...but I think as a program gets better and better it has less to play for in a way. In the early 2000's most of our players were not highly recruited high school kids that were offered by every major program in the country. Our team didnt have the respect it has today. Those players had something to play for, they had something to PROVE. They might not have been the most talented or the fastest or the biggest but they went out and played with intensity and emotion to prove the doubters wrong. Just go back and look at the defense from Saban's second year at LSU. I would take that defense over this year's defense in a heartbeat.

Me too.

DT - Lavalais
DT - H Green
DE - Kipps
DE - J Green
OLB - B James
OLB - J Lawrence
MLB - T Faulk
CB - Hookfin
CB - D James
SS - N LeJeune
FS - R Clark

As bad as that unit was at times (Florida and Ole Miss were awful; first Tennessee affair was all Damond and getting burned by K Washington; all other games were respectable for the most part.

Regardless, that D was much more monstrous, tenacious, and ball hawking than what we have now. That group got scored on quite a bit, but by top opponents...what does that say about this one?

Pisces - The defense doesnt have to shut them down, just keep them under 24 or so, the way I see it... THAT they are capable of IF the offense can keep the D off the field for periods of time. Still - the defense I have seen from our Tigers so far does not give me any confidence that we can do that versus Florida (even at home), Alabama and Georgia on the road, and maybe even Auburn.

I will say everyone saying that the 80 or so plays State ran is all of the offense's fault are all a little off base. You have to stop their offense from getting 1st downs... Special teams let us down a bit and interceptions we get and a 3 and out by the offense doesn't help momentum or attitude either.

UGA probably saw what Dixon was doing in the 4th. Noted.
