You are grossly misinformed. At least half of the LSU band directors since the late 1940s have come directly from high school, including L. Bruce Jones and Bill Swor, among others. Get your facts straight.

So you enjoyed the West Side Story show two years ago?

Yes. As I said in an earlier post, I am mature to realize that although I (or you) may not like every show the LSU band has performed in the past, there is always a segment of the fan base that does.

And many college coaches used to come straight from high school too.

Guess what? I bet no coach ever again goes straight from high school to HC at an SEC school.

But you thought you had a gem of a point.

Damn, you're dumb.

Looking at rehearsals by the band hall, numbers look WAY down.

We already had one of the smaller bands in the SEC. It will be embarrassing if our numbers drop below those of Vandy, Ole Miss, and Kentucky.

Yes...but that was by choice. Why is this important? Because if you are cutting people to get down to 325, the overall talent will be higher than if you are accepting everyone who walks in the door (even if they can't play very well).

That 325 cap (which was raised from 300 to 325 when I was there) is there for a reason. It has to do with the stipend payments made to the band members, which are there to draw in quality members. In my case, that money enabled me to stay in TGBFTL for 4 years. It didn't pay as much as a part-time job, but it allowed me the time to stay immersed in my studies.

Take a look at the bands in the SEC. Even with a recent downtick thanks to constrained budgets and stupid in-fighting, LSU is still better than many bigger SEC bands. With a great director, they can be back at the top of the conference within 5 years, even with the same numbers.

Not for long and not with the current leadership.

Before you say stupid shite, maybe you should know something about the subject. Try reading about how many award West Side Story has won over the years, the number of times it has been revived on Broadway, etc. Also, the music was written by Bernstein....maybe one of the greatest musical wonders of the modern world.
the west side story show from a couple years ago was probably the worst show tigerband has ever done

I guess you did not like it....and you sound like an expert, so......
Was the music bad? Was it played badly? Was the marching bad? So, according to your statement ("the worst show tigerband has ever done"), you are saying it was ranked below the West Side Story performance of the late 70's, and the one from the mid 80's, the one from the late 90's and the one from the early 2000's.

In all honesty, the people want the band to have perfection in marching down the hill, performing pregame, and each offensive and defensive down cheer. Halftime is gravy, with hopefully a little less Latin influence.

The music was bad and the drill was horrible. The second song was only about 30 seconds. It was terrible

No I hated the one from 2 or so years ago. Any reasonable person will admit it was a horrible show

Bigger doesn't equal better. If JSU's football team showed up somehow with 210 scholarship players would that make them better than LSU? JSU's band is great because they of the aggressiveness in which they use the marching band as a recruiting tool for music majors.

Any awards, accolades or "rankings" for college bands are pretty much bullshite so quit pointing to the "rankings".

There are no bidding wars for big time college band directors. This is the not same as football.

While entertaining to drunk football fans- Ohio State's band is absolute dogshit in terms of quality so please quit using that as an example because they did a Michael Jackson with a moonwalk drill effect. They are also totally different stylistically than LSU. Just like A&M is drastically different.

Anytime there is a big divide in the school of music and the marching band - both suffer in quality in my opinion. This is LSU.

As for the lack of creativity in the half time shows - all bands recycle stuff. Would you be more impressed if they played recognizable current music like Lady Gaga or Katy Perry? Most current popular music has nothing going on and would sound like shite if arranged in a marching band setting. I'm honestly curious what music you people would suggest the band perform at half time?

I thought you would say that....it was basically the same show (exact same music). It does not bother me that YOU did not care for it, but to classify it as
the worst show ever is certainly a stretch. I remember a show back in the late 80's/early 90's when the band got booed. Good thing most LSU fans don't agree with you or they might of got booed again.
