Was at the '79 game. LSU by any measure should not have stayed within 3 TDs of USC, but someone forgot to tell the Tigers. They played WAY beyond their talent level that night & nearly pulled off what would have been one of the greatest upsets in CFB history.
Not sous how the upcoming game compares. LSU is one of a few teams that has similar talent to Bammer, and if TS is even close to what it was last week against SC, the Tigers will be right there at the end.
Bammer hasn't been pushed yet, & MSU could give them a shove or two this week.

I was at that game...yes Benji got the facemask but the play should have been blown dead when the flag was thrown everyone thought it was for the two lineman that moved because the crowd erupted with excitement over it...
One of the worst blown calls by the PAC 10 refs ever...
Like another poster stated...imagine the earthquake game for over 3 solid hours...that was what it was like...like I've stated before NOTHING has came close to that game in crowd noise and longevity of it being made...

quote:It was legit. USC false started on the same play, and that was a blown call.
on a phantom facemask penalty at the end of the game
Still, you gotta be better than the refs AND your competition in any game, and LSU overachieved big time in that game.
SC's talent was superior, that's what won the ballgame.

The ''79 USC game was my freshman year at LSU. It was unbelievable. There have been two others that are in it's class. I think that the players' collective will is going to decide the outcome of this Bama game. The fans that buy into the media hype have no clue what the LSU effort will be. This team plays to the level of their competition; not like last year's team. Expect a tremendous effort and the best this LSU team has to offer. Combine that with TS at night and Bama has their hands full. Should be epic.

I was at that game too. Could tell stories for hours about that whole day.
Wasn't Steve Ensminger the QB in that game?

I was there too. It was the loudest game I ever attended. All day was a party. They didn't even check flasks then. Trojan condoms were hanging everywhere. The westside gates under my friends stadium dorm room had rubbers all over the place. Funny, my new wife was from Miss State and had never seen such a thing. I don't think it was Ensminger,he came later. Was it Hillman or the left handed QB? I Forget. Could it have been Screen?

With two future Heisman winners and three future members of the NFL Hall of Fame. If any team is unbeatable, they should have been. They came into Tiger Stadium facing a team with much less talent than the 2012 edition of the Tigers. On paper, it should have been a blowout, but it took a disputed penalty for them to escape with a nail biter.
2012 Bama is an excellent team, but they're no 79 USC. And 2012 LSU is much, much better than 79 LSU. We have every chance to win this thing. That's why you play the game. Roll the ball out there and see what happens.
I shouldn't have to even be saying this, but so many fair weather fans are already conceding the loss in a game that will have a pick em line or at most a couple of points either way. As stated on another thread, Saban took some of you guys' balls with him when he left.
This is a dumb analogy in my opinion. I don't think anyone has counted LSU out of the game. We're at home, and we're a top 10-15 team at worst, even with the offensive woes. A top tier team can beat anyone at home if they catch a few breaks and this year's squad is a top tier team. To consider this a David and Goliath type game with LSU at home is ridiculous.
With that being said, I have serious concerns about the offense, which have emerged over the course of the last 4-5 years. LSU very well could win this game, but I, as a fan, am concerned that our chances might be severely impacted by the choices that the coaching staff is likely to make based on recent history.
I say go LSU and likely will put some money on LSU straight up to win. I was happy with what I considered less predictable play calling from the Texas A&M game and am hopeful that Miles will have some creativity planned for a revenge game at home. If we play scared on offense and try to cram it down their throats without any diversity in play calling or aggressiveness like in the National Championship game, I'll be livid with the coaching staff as I was in January when the potentially best college football team in history played scared and beat themselves, which would continue to affect my middling opinion of Miles as a coach. If we lose and go out swinging with some swagger, heart, and confidence, I'll be happy with the team and likely with Miles too.

I remember that game. LSU was called for a facemask penalty on a punt. USC got the ball back and drove for the winning TD. Sucked for sure.
That day the LSU defense played an awesome game. Maybe it will Nov. 3, but I doubt it will be enough.

NO they are not. BUT LSU is about the same on offense as the 1979 team was.

ALL I will say is that THIS Bama team is rockin on ALL cylinders and I just don't see THIS LSU offense beating them. REMEBER THIS. BAMA WILL NOT BEAT THEMSELVES.

I think that it's more Chicken Little, sky is falling due to the perceived lack of improvement on offense, which I think is justified. Although many are being dramatic with their voiced frustrations, I don't think anyone would consider this a Harlem Globetrotters v. Boston Generals type game, which is how I interpreted your characterization.

First of all I didn't say "relative". I said relevant. If someone is trying to make a point that Bama is "beatable" by an inferior LSU team, the relevant references would be where LSU had previously beaten a #1 ranked opponent, Alabama or a Saban coached team being upset while being ranked # 1 or how may times another top 10 team had knocked off a #1 team. How the hell does a game that LSU actually LOST to USC 33 years ago validate that Alabama is "beatable" when they play LSU in 2012?
You miss the entire spirit of the OP by trying to split hairs. It doesn't mstter if the game was 33 years ago or one year ago. It doesn't matter that we lost in the final minute or won the game.
Your argument is not relevant to the spirit of the OP. My interpretation of the OP was (which was aimed at folks who don't think it possible to beat Bama) to provide an example of how an inspired LSU team in Tiger Stadium can beat long odds which the '79 team did by leading in the game until the final minute. The OP's point which somehow eludes you is that if this '79 team can be so inspired by the magic of Tiger Stadium to very nearly do what everyone said was impossible then certainly by comparison the task for this year's team is very acheivable.
To clarify for you further the point is that beating the 2012 Alabama team in TS will be less remarkable than very nearly beating the '79 USC team which some claim was the greatest college football team of all time.
If you need more clarification than this you are beyond reaching.

My first game as a freshman was the '79 USC game. We stood in the student section the entire game and stomped the metal bleachers with our shoes which made a deafening noise.
I took a date who seemed annoyed by the entire spectacle. Needless to say I never asked her out again.....

LSU had a team in 1979? How could that be? That was before the current generation was even born. Stop making up these phantom stories, they stress out the high-quality/all-knowing youngsters.

Hijack...is video available for that USC game?

We shouldn't need to be inspired. We're arguably the most prolific college football team in the last decade, are ranked #6 in the country, and are playing at home. The rationale for needing to be inspired relates to lack of confidence in our team and a fear of Alabama.
