That makes sense. But everyone now needs to adjust their expectations for the defense.

You want a nosebleed tempo offense, you're not going to pair that with a defense that shuts talented teams down all game. It doesn't happen.

Defense not getting stops is what taxes the defense.

without moving the ball

key detail there — not something that typically applies to this year’s squad. But fair point otherwise.

To be clear, I’m criticizing people who have tried to ascribe defensive issues to the changes in the offensive philosophy. (Also, I’m not super worried about the D)

Agreed, we have been able to move the ball and keep possession. We aren’t asking a lot of our D, like some aTm and Oregon type pace teams in recent memory that would have their defense out there with 5 minute intervals at times.

Having said that I think our D will shape up.

Clemson, Bama, UGA (the rest of the current AP top 4 sans LSU) all finished 2018 in top 15 total defense and offense.

UGA is not really tempo, but Clemson & Bama definitely rocked some tempo in 2018.

It’s not only possible, it’s the template right now.

The D needs to get 3 and out, that is on the defense, not the offense. Substitution of the defensive players and playing different players on special teams will help the D out. This gives our younger outstanding players increased playing time and more game experience, which in the long term will help the D out. Win-win! :nana
