This will show the fans and recruits that we want Bball to be like football.

Hell, why not Coach K, Roy Williams, or Bill Self?

LSU isn't getting Brad Stevens...I think we would get Shaka before we got Stevens lol. Take the purple and gold glasses off.

offer them 4 to 5 million a year and see what that would do. I bet that top 50 places to coach would drop down real quick

People say this, and then they're among the 100 percent who bitch when our (very inexpensive) football season tickets increase in price.

Maybe you should have looked at his contract extension from last year before you started this.

I didn't think we could look at the contracts coaches sign with private universities. Can you enlighten me?

Because sometimes you got a good arse job where you absolutely run the roost. Shaka turned down 2.5 million because he makes 7 figures at VCU and doesn't have teh pressure and bullshite of a major program. Brad Stevens has made just as many Final Fours in the last 3 years as LSU has in the last 20.
Talk money all day...but the difference between being "the man" and having that low-pressure, good arse job is worlds better than pressure cooking at a big school and wondering when your demise will be.

Stevens is in Indiana.
take a moment and look at Rivals for basketball recruits.
Here is the brief summary: there are NO Louisiana high school players in the top 100 for the class of freshmen who just finished their season.
I went thru the rivals top 100 for 2011-2012, and Chicago IL has 8, including one 5 star and seven 4 star.
check out Indiana. Butler is in Indianapolis.
Louisiana has none. got it? NONE.
You have to understand, that in basketball, Indiana is what Louisiana is in football. its right in the middle of REAL basketball recruiting territory. Illinois on the west, Chicago to the NW, and Ohio on the east, Louisville, Kentucky to the south. Bingo.
You know how UTk football fans have just come to the realization that Tennessee high school football does not produce SEC level players in enough numbers, so UTk has to recruit Atlanta, Louisville and Cincinnati? Well, if you want to compete with the big time programs, Louisiana State U basketball coaches have to go outside the state. And why, pray tell, would anyone go to LSU when they can go to a school just as good academically and closer to home. There is no tradition of excellence here.
Not on the court. A couple of good teams a decade ago and longer. that's not a tradition, that's having a couple of good players one season.
Get over it. LSU is not 'it' in basketball. So you cant get great coaches to come.
I will give an example: Murray State cannot compete with Louisville, and UK for in-state players.
The best local-to-Murray player went to UK this past year, a guy from Mayfield.
So.. Murray has to recruit nationally. I just looked at their recruit list on maxpreps because of Trent being hired away.
Murray will be getting
#3 player from state of Alabama. a 6 5" shooter. will play immediately, as they are graduating 3 seniors, including the small forward.
---
#12 player from Louisiana. double double and 3 blocks a game.
---
#14 player from Florida
---
#72 player from North Carolina who wont get on the court because he will be behind two decent point guards including 3rd team all American, Canaan, a Katrina refuge from Biloxi.
you see the word SQUAD for some LSU football players. This guy from NC will be "squad". never going to see the court. practice player.
You notice that coaches leave Murray the minute they have notable success. LSU is like Murray and like UTk in football. out of state recruiting is necessary. I keep seeing posts from guys hoping to get the best Louisiana players, and often they dont even get the few good ones, but even if they did, they are not top 100 material.
Why would a top coach come to LSU? Shaka Smart?
Its not worth it if you only last a couple of years. Trent was smart. He got out right before he would have been run off. He could read TD. He had one more year, MAXIMUM.

Everything you said made sense except for this, which is just ridiculous.
LSU had one of the longest NCAA tournament appearance streaks under Dale Brown throughout the '80s and '90s.
LSU and the NCAA tournament were as synonymous as LSU and Omaha in baseball.

Otto, very accurate analysis. To win you must have good players. LSU will never be a "one and done" program. They will have to recruit good players from all over with the intention of building a program where players will stay 3-4 years. A good example of a high profile program is Syracuse. The do get players that leave early but they have a mix of outstanding players that stay.
Personally, I think to get an outstanding coach, a commitment in dollars and longevity must be made. Dale and LSU made a commitment to each otherr and he proved you can win at LSU. A must - the new coach has to recruit wherever good players are (example-Willams, Greg Cook, Rudy, Sims, etc.) Thanks for your post.
