I'd agree this is the best way to determine a playoff.
The polls allow for the balance of people who think that conference champions are more deserving than a team without one.
The computers flat out only care about what happens on the field.

As a big numbers guy, the formula used prior to 2003 really was the best one. Factored in wins, opponents wins, quality wins, etc. Your loses were measured by the strength of who you lost to...
Problem was a blue blood didn't benefit (USC) so we had to change that all too fair formula.
Remember that after 2003 it was imperative that whoever made the BCS title game HAD to win their conference. Remember? Every game counted!
Until another blue blood (Bama) couldn't do it on their own with one of the weakest resumes in history...
