the only great defense I saw from Chavis was in 2011.
That year spoiled a lot of fans. The bar has been set so high that nearly anything else will be a failure.

And you are correct about laying off Les. It only becomes a Les problem if the coaches continue to fail at doing their jobs and Les doesn't make the corrections in the offseason

What happened to the defense that causes turnovers, sacks, tackles for a loss?
When have we ever had an attacking, aggressive defense under Chavis? That's not his style. We've fielded some very good defenses under him, but I wouldn't classify any of them as being very aggressive.

Plain and simple explanation for anyone trying to figure it out and place blame. We lost most of the defense to the NFL. The ones that are back aren't that good and the new ones aren't either. Some of this is a talent issue and most is inexperience. Chavis or Miles can't perform miracles. It feels better to try and arm chair coach but we just aren't good on defense this year for obvious reasons.

I couldnt agree with you more.I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone mention that yet. I was about to pull my hair out watchin that unfold.

Not that I'm on Les, but he is the head coach and as such he is responsible for everything.

actually the last 2 years the d couldnt get itself off the field. It has been a slow decline. Even with our offense, the d is still on the field longer.
Les should get the blame, but he deserves all the credit. you cant say chavis saved his job then blame him when the d has now cost us 3 games.

When he said he won't sacrifice speed for size I knew this defense would be in trouble upfront and lb wise too. If your dline can't get pressure on qb then you're in big trouble. Cant rush small weak dudes against big olinemen and expect results.

From wiki ref Chavis:
Chavis and other members of the staff have seen increased pressure after a slow start to the 2007 season, including double-digit losses to California and Florida.
Chavis's career at Tennessee came to an end in the middle of the 2008 season. Following a 3-6 start and a blowout loss to Steve Spurrier and South Carolina. Chavis's final three games would bring confidence but major disappointment to his final days with UT, starting with an embarrassing 13-7 loss to Wyoming which would keep UT from making a bowl for the second time in four years.
If you read the part before this, he started very well and was promoted and had many accolades.
Then it all went downhill...why I do not know..
maybe he gets lazy or his schemes get figured out.
Be he seems to get success and then go to failure.
There is no excuse for what is happening at LSU, it needs fixing and now.
Is history repeating itself ?

I had a store in Knoxville TN and one of the criticisms from people I knew, was that he would go into this read/react or passive mode which would result in losses to any team w/ speed.

So, am I to understand that in years past Chavis was able to produce great defenses, but inexplicably this year he's a failure? Could it be, oh I don't know, a lack of player talent? Coaching only gets you so far.
Dont you dare bring common sense into this! We have to blame the coaches. Who else could be responsible? Players not making plays? That's silly.

I wonder whats going on with him. It's not like we have fielded a whole new defense at the start of the first game
Even the defense after the Bama game last year sucked with a ton of NFL talent. I don't know what's going on but something has changed.

see what I posted above...
same thing happened in Tenn...
started HOT, great defense and all of a sudden, it went to hell and he got fired...
don't ask me for a reason...
It needs correcting now !

Pretty much sums it for me. I have never been sold on him and the fact that he continues game after game to play soft zone/prevent, or whatever in the hell you want to call it is complete horsecrap. And what we saw Saturday will continue until like others have said, miles steps in and cracks the whip.

I get it that Les is responsible for the total team, my point is that Chavis is supposed to be this defensive guru, he needs to fix his scheme, I said earlier Les needs to crack the whip.

100% AGREE! It was a fun game to watch. Glad I was able to be there too.

Both Chavis and les are good, but the fact is that had the offense not been so inept for so many years, the defensive players the team lost last year probably wouldn't have been so compelled to leave.

Pretty solid post.
Les was negligent for YEARS regarding the offense. Years where LSU had All American talent on both sides of the ball. Les finally came out of his stupor (or was forced) to hire Cameron to fix the pathetic offense that Les was responsible for. He is the Head Coach...remember?
Now...as the post above states, our defense is in a shambles because we no longer have All American talent on defense due mainly to the early departure of so many defenders.
I happen to agree that some of the early draft entries would not have happened if LSU had not been so miserable on offense for so long with no help in sight it seemed from Les.
I still think that Chavis is an under achiever when it comes to coaching up the talent. He gets paid way too much money to not be one of the best all around defensive coordinators in the country. That secondary looked like a Pee Wee team out there on Saturday. They didnt have a clue mentally or fundamentally. This can be placed on the coach.

Yeah, blame Miles because a OC he hired in 2011 came down with a disease and LSU had to scramble at the last minute to resign duties.

Wait, I thought LSU was the most talented team in the nation every year and by far?
I swear, some of our fans are so fricking stupid.
