re: If an unproven 0.500 coach out of the b12 can succeed

So was Saban... He had a 58.5% winning percentage at Mich St. And was not a well known guy across the country. Hell, not everybody thought it was a good hire when it happened.
Saban was well respected as the next up and comer. It's the reason LSU signed him to the 3rd highest CFB HC salary at the time without setting foot on campus.

Why didn't they before then? Were Dinardo, Hallman, Archer and Stovall all awful before they took the reigns? I would pretty much consider 3/4 of those halfway decent before they were the head coach at LSU and look where they ended up. We have had sustained success well past Saban's tenure here. We ARE a powerhouse. Some idiot couldn't have just come in here and kept us at the level we're at for a decade. Some school have 10 win season as the pinnacle of their entire football history. Ours are a consolation. Be thankful.

Not really...
We signed him to a big contract because we had to lure him away from Mich St, who was trying to sign him once they found out that LSU and Saban had mutual interest in each other.
In 1995, Mich St went 6-5-1, 1996 they went 6-6, 1997 they went 7-5, 1998 they went 6-6, and 1999 they went 9-2. So before the 1999 season, Saban had a 52% winning percentage in the first 4 seasons at Mich St.
People knew he was an NFL guy and learned under Belichick, but he was not a big name head coach prior to LSU.

Everybody is assuming that we have to take chance on someone that is relatively unproven. There is no reason why LSU can't go out and reel in a proven big name coach like harbaugh. TAF has the bucks. Just need the nads to pull the trigger

DiNardo lost his last game at Vandy by 50+ points before being hired. But anything was better than Curley, whose only success was with Brett Favre. Archer wasn't ready to be a HC after Arnsparger moved on. Stovall was hired because Bo Rein died tragically in a plane crash. All of these were cheap hires by LSU.
Saban wasn't a cheap hire. He got paid $1.6 million a year - 3rd in CFB at the time - prior to coaching a down at LSU. He set up LSU for future success and when he left, LSU went cheap again hiring Miles for $1.3 million/year - 5 years later. The market had shifted at that time. It was cheap.
Curley fricking Hallman could have won 10+ games in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

say I am a very successful coach and LSU comes calling - they have just gotten rid of the most successful coach in their history, a guy who coaches in the toughest division and conference in America, a guy who has been in two national championship games and won one, a guy who has won his division and conference more than once, got a 100 victories quicker than all but one coach (Spurrier) in the SEC and graduates his players. But they got rid of him. I would have to ask myself can I do any better? I ask this because you must to make this fan base happy.

quote:Yes, really. LSU signed him to the 3rd highest salary in CFB history because he was pinpointed at THE GUY to resurrect LSU by Mark Emmert. If Joe Dean had any sway in it, LSU would have hired some retread for $500k.

You fail to mention that Saban inherited sanctions at MSU and still made them relevant. When he left, the fell off that map until Dantonio took over.

CEO's for major corporations take jobs at other companies that fired the most recent CEO that has had past success all the time. People have egos and enjoy opportunity. I know it's hard for some people to understand, but it's true.

I think he had already declined the New York Giants and Indianapolis Colts while at Michigan State.

The point is that while we could make another home run hire and be in great shape, we could also be like Tennessee, still trying to replace Fulmer
Fulmer hung around too long. He could no longer recruit an missed on 3 if his last 4 classes. Alleva screwed up with the contract extensions. The only way that Miles leaves is if he wants 2. We're screwd for at least 2-3 more years. By then it may be 2 late

Once they have some fuzzy idea in their head, they run with it without any facts or history to back them.
The truth is LSU paid Saban the 3rd highest salary when he was hired in 1999 for a reason.

quote:Um, well, Saban at LSU had a worse record than Miles at LSU. By your logic, that means Saban (and every other coach in school history) is less than halfway decent.
I feel like if someone like fricking Les Miles can be the most successful coach in history here, then any halfway decent coach could turn this program into an absolute powerhouse
I assume your nonsensical response will be something equivalent to "Saban made Miles," so save yourself the trouble.

DiNardo: Yeah, pretty much. He was a panic hire when the deal with Pat Sullivan (probably wouldn't have been any better) fell thru. Pretty underwhelming hire at the time. Lost his final game at Vandy to Peyton Manning & Tennessee by a score of 65-0.
Stovall: Couldn't say. Emergency hire. No HC coaching experience before or since.
Archer: Minus the emergency hire thing, see Stovall.
Hallman: one good year at Southern Miss. Of course, a senior Brett Favre (not even recruited by Hallman) can pretty much make anybody look like a good coach.

Um, well, Saban at LSU had a worse record than Miles at LSU.
Saban took over at LSU that was 7-15 the last 2 seasons.
Miles took over at LSU that was 22-4 the last 2 seasons.

LSU thought it could catch lighting in a bottle like the Saban hire.
You know, I remember the day and where I was the moment that it was unofficially announced by Charles Hanagriff on the radio that Nick Saban was to be named the next coach for LSU, and I also remember why I was so ecstatic over the news, and it was because I saw him as the opposite of a polished politician, but rather an absolutely no nonsense football gurus who was being wasted in East Lansing. He was very highly respected by all his peers, and the biggest negative was simply how long he would be here before he bolted for the NFL. That was from day 1.
Fast forward to the day Les was hired, and there was absolutely NO such buzz at all. Matter of fact, the word out of OSU was they called him Les for a reason, and it was because we would get Less for it in passing.
As it turns out, it would seem there were no big secrets with either hire. Saban was as advertised, and so was Les. It's LSU that makes really good coaches great, just like at Alabama. The talent we have to pull from here is phenomenal to state the obvious. Both Saban and Les knew this, and did a great job at sealing up the state for the most part. Saban was just a better coach and turned what was pretty much poo poo when he took it over into an SEC Champ by year 2, and National Champ by year 4.

Always possible and I've always been against going to a replacement.. however I feel now Miles is truly on the decline and his stubborn ways are costing us greatly.. I also feel the talent of Louisiana high school football is far superior than Tennessee and recruiting will always be a huge favor to LSU being the only major program in state.. I feel like if LSU would sustain the defense, they will still recruit high quality backs in state, and o-line.. that they really could benefit greatly from a coach who can get something big out of the QB position.. but hey that's just me now..

quote:Problem is, Saban built a culture of excellence into our football program in 4-5 years. In 10 years, Les Miles has whittled, wasted, eroded and unraveled it, so that the next coach is going to really have to be a rebuilder and a motivator, to undo all the lax and ineffective Les Miles ways that have taken root over the years.
Saban handed this a-hole the winning powerball ticket, and Miles cashed it in. Hence his record here.
I KNOW a halfway decent coach could turn this into a powerhouse.

Miles has to be one of the luckiest people on Earth.
To make over $4 million a year with his coaching ability is unreal.
