Zach and his parents played LSU. They knew full well that if Zach looked like he was going all out for LSU the Dodgers would pony up some serious cash. So the kid enrolls, plays the game, has a little fun pretending to be QB for the last time and sweats out the Dodgers.
Once the Dodgers made him a first rounder. LSU was out of the picture except as a wedge.

Cynical and cold on their part but it is business. Just as it will be business if Zach blows out his arm in AA ball and the Dodgers release him.
