It's truly shocking he is still here. He must be a great negotiator with LSU lol
Not really. Here's why.
1. As bad as he was, LSU was not going to fire him after year 1. Particularly with a 7 year contract.
2. In year 2 he showed improvement. Now, improvement doesn't equal "good". But it was still improvement Given there was 5 years left on the contract he was retained for year 3.
3. Year 3. LSU was terrible, which, collectively, made LSU the least successful program in the SEC for that 3 year period. Most HCs would have been let go. In fact, looking at past history, most LSU HCs would have been let go then. Orgeron, Mainieri (who was nudged out) and Fargas were all let go after shorter and less egregiously poor performance. But this is where the situation is unique. LSU's former coach was still very popular with the fans/donors and he was winning at a high rate at another school in Louisiana. Connected people wanted him back at LSU. The Admin (Tate/Woodward) did not. The best way to avoid that standoff was to make the LSU job unavailable. That's why McMahon got year 4. Not because the admin was pleased with the "progress" or state of the program. They weren't dumb. They could see the losing and lack of interest. But because they wanted to kick the can down the road one more year to get rid of the "Wade problem" assuming (correctly) he would get a power conf. job after last season.

If this is true, it's a slap in the face to the people that pay good money to LSU basketball to watch a crap product one more year just to spite the fanbase and somewhat save face.
