Our Bumbling Baffoon is 3-3 VS. the Coaching Genious himself. Amazing how that worked out.
Miles is actually 1-2 vs Saban. LSU won 41-34 in 2007 in a game that should have been a blowout with the talent differential between the two teams. Bama won 27-21 in 2008 and 24-15 in 2009.
It's been a tight game each time Miles and Saban have squared off and I expect the same kind of battle this year...provided Lee gets most of the snaps. As to the deal about having Bama on the ropes last year before injuries...that's debatable but either way injuries are part of the game. LSU has too much class to use that as an excuse like Texas fans did with McCoy being knocked out of the NC game.
FWIW, I always liked Miles and thought he got a bad rap with the "he won with Saban's players" line of thought. After all, despite Saban having recruited most of the 2007 team, he only had a small part in their development and he wasn't the one coaching them. My opinion of Miles began to waver after the Ole Miss debacle. I was at that game and it was the most epic meltdown I've ever seen from a head coach. How the hell do you lose a game that way? Now, I think some of the blame rests with Crowton and Jefferson but at the end of the day Miles gets paid the big $$ to make sure nothing like that happens. Crowton needs to be canned this off-season and surely will be. But that's what I thought last year so we'll see.

I like him too, even I throw bad words to him several times. But I just hope we become better day after day.

This makes me sick... No one was defending Miles after the Tennessee game.

I saw that other thread devoted him, but I don't know anything of him.

He was talking about Meyer.

I've been a Miles supporter throughout, even if at times of my highest anger I feel otherwise.

This +1
He outcoached Meyers jock off.
Meyers actually outcoached Saban, but his team made too many mistakes and turnovers.
Spurier schooled Saban.

Surely you jest. Miles and Saban have both recruited well. I would say the talent level was relatively even the last couple of years. Bama didn't get to cherry pick players when they were under NCAA sanctions. The 2007 game still had a lot of guys who were lacking in character and dedication. By the next year, graduation or attrition had eliminated those who didn't buy into Saban's process.

My original post ...
Bottom line—for better or worse—I'd like to see our teams as well-coached as the recent Bama and Florida teams. I don't think I'm seeing that ... and that's why I wonder if Miles is the best guy for us.
Drew these responses ...
Q: What if the Florida "Glory Run" of 06-09 had a lot to do with a certain individual with a last name that started with a "T"? I mean seriously, where's the great coaching from Meyer this year?
A: Recruiting Tim Tebow was a real coup for Meyer—which surely reflects well on the coach. More to the point though, Meyer has been quite successful at each of his HC jobs, leading me to believe that the Gators' recent successes under his management were not a fluke. The 2010 Gators may not be a top 10 team, but if you pay attention to recruiting, you know Meyer has recruited top 5 classes since he came to Florida, and continues to draw—and develop—top talent for his program. I expect the Gators will do quite well in the years ahead.
Q:I have a philisophical question for you: If you had to take Les exactly how he is (a winner, honorable, great recruiter, puzzling, crazy talker, anemic offence, inflexible, etc) or have the well-coached UF or Bama perception with the possibility of playing criminals, coaches are dicks, self-absorbed and sanctimonious, and could leave at any time...which would you choose?
A: First, Miles seems to be a great guy; a real class person. And I'm not real fond of dick heads even if they win 99% of their football games: life's too short to hang out with assholes. But—and again, this is my perception—in watching recent Bama and Florida teams, it's seemed to me their players were not better than ours—they just played better. Smarter, more sure of what to do, less apt to make tactical errors. My deduction is that coaching makes the difference here. Is it possible to coach in this manner and not be a dick head? I'd imagine so; I imagine there are coaches out there who are both decent guys and kick arse football instructors. There may not be a lot, but surely there are a few. Think John Wooden, the old UCLA basketball coach.
Q: Eliminating the unnamed Florida and Alabama coaches because they will never come to LSU, who is the best coach for LSU in your mind?
A: Man did you ask the wrong person; I'm no coaching expert, and it would take someone a helluva lot more knowledgeable than me to give you a good answer. I will say a number of good names have been tossed around on this board, and should Miles stumble, there ARE people out there to consider.
As I wrote earlier though, I'm going to give Miles the whole 2010 season before deciding whether or not I'd want him to stay. I really like the guy; he's a good man no doubt, and I hope he coaches lights out the rest of the way. But I'd be lying if I said I that believe our recent teams have been as well-coached as our top two conference competitors. I just don't think that's the case.

Les seems to have the integrity some of the big name coaches are lacking....
Parents seem to love him and trust him.
He seems to be a straight shooter when it comes to telling the truth.
Recruits seem to trust his word and admire him.
He may not be the best coach in the country or the best person at picking up asst. coaches, but he does seem to bring a sense of honor to LSU that seems to be lacking in a lot of other top programs.
Seems to me the people that hate him the most are the people here that would sacrifice their own mothers to have a undefeated season.
Life is more than sports and thats what Coach Miles brings to the table when recruiting...

All of Miles' issues stem from RP. He made a mistake recruiting him, although every fan here thought it was the right move at the time.
The fact that he cut him loose knowing that it would decimate the QB position shows you the type of character of the man. Most coaches would have never had the stones to do that. Just look at Meyer with Rainey, he is losing so now suddenly Rainey has been forgiven.
The guy has to get the clock issues under control and find a new OC at the end of the season. Outside of that, he is a great coach and his players give him maximum effort. He also runs a clean program which is a nice touch considering the issues some of our SEC brethren have. He is also one of the top 5 recruiters in this country and our position bordering Texas and having great in state talent makes that a powerful combination.
Not to mention he has mystical powers as SVP says.

Not really. We were woefully thin at many key positions the last two years, including QB, OL and DL.
