Of course, but to say that you don't learn more about football if you truly immerse yourself in the game and take it seriously is a tad too dismissive. Granted most people just chose plays they think look cool and never adjust or call audibles based on what the opponent does. But some do and this does teach something. Of course the mechanics are extremely oversimplified but it does help to understand some things.

I'm pretty knowledgeable...

- short side option sucks
- blitz more
- throw to the tight end more
- offense is too conservative
- too much soft zone
- back foot throws
- BBQ
- pet players

I've never played football competitively, but I've been a fan my entire life. I would give myself the following grades:

History: A
Statistics: A
Physical knowledge: D
Xs&Os: B-

General knowledge: Solid B, in my opinion.

Let me guess: All you know about football you learned from the rant?

I could be wrong, but does the Air Force use some type of video game type technology as part of training?

My point is that this isn't the 1980s in which people are still playing pac-man and pitfall. Video games can be a learning instrument as well.

They weren't penalized because 4 in the backfield is the rule. You can't have more than 4 in the backfield.

For example, LSU wasn't penalized for an illegal formation against Mississippi State because they had 4 men in the backfield.

Didn't really understand why.

Offense must have 7 men on the line of scrimmage ... oh, and I'd rate myself a B+.

That's not actually the rule any more- the new rule is that you must have no more than 4 men in the backfield.

Very slight difference, mainly that before if you tried to run a play with only 10 guys on the field and the missing one was supposed to be on the line it was a penalty, whereas now its not.

Edited to add that the reason it was announced that way was to conform with the new wording.

Hence my B+ rating ... I haven't kept up with the rules changes.

It's a really random change, happened a couple of years ago. The only reason I remember is because I was reading an article about rule changes and thought that one was stupid and would never matter, then the very next week I was watching a game where a team punted with only 6 guys on the LOS but only 4 in the backfield.

My strong point, I think, is the game beyond the X's & O's. For example, I think I have a pretty good understanding of a team's chemistry in terms of situation.. If that makes sense.

It appears you don't know anything about football then. How do you get a "B" out of this?

Compared to the average layman, I'm very knowledgeable. But there are coaches in my family, and whenever I talk to them, I realize there's a lot I don't know.

A+

But i'll admit I'm in the small minority.

X's & O's is my job

B+

I dont know a ton about x's and O's.

But, I can accurately predict the exact score of every game before hand.

Played both ways in high school and as Captain of defense, was responsible for making defensive adjustments and blitz calls so I'd give myself an A-.

Would take a coach or referee to get an A in my book.

Im the same. Can get a vibe for a team without getting into details, schemes etc

B for myself but I am also a observer, I see things that other fans may miss.

I can do that in a neutral game. I'm so geeked up watching an LSU game that afterward I rarely remember much of what happened.

Which is the reason I trust Miles' decisions. I'm certainly not as knowledgeable as the 100 or so football Einsteins on the rant. The only reason I give them shite is because I want to push them to pursue their dreams of being the HC at a BCS program.
