it was a 14 point swing because we likely punch in another td on them. instead they get it and hit us up for another td

Well, I feel no one play losses a game. I didn't expect to see the D so lost, but we knew going into this game that our D wasn't up to speed. When they aren't up to speed, the other aspects need to be mistake free. The muffed punt just added to the other miscues which equalled a loss.

It was a crucial mistake. We was about to take that game by the nuts.

Allowed a momentum swing for UGA. We had broken serve and were in a position to put them in a bad way.

As much as I love Beck, and realize he's one of the most exciting players on the field, he has habitually made silly decisions when it comes to returns...forcing a catch when it would be advisable to just let the ball hit on the sideline, or not feeling the need to pretend he's going to run into a group of defenders who are watching the ball roll to a stop...or like last night not fair catching a ball when he doesn't even have one step of room. I love how he thinks he can turn any return into a TD...the reality is no one can, and someone needs to break this to him.

It's time to give them the red light. It's that simple.

It was not the sole reason we lost, but it was the most pivotal play of the game. We had offensive momentum and had an opportunity to take the lead on that drive. We do that and score again, we have a two possession game. Instead they get a TD on a short field. Most crucial individual play of the whole game.

I think a bigger play was when Mett over threw OBJ on the drive to open up the second half. He would have walked right into the end zone and would have tied the score at 24-24 instead we had to settle for Field Goal.

OBJ made up for it later in the game, but it was a big deal in terms of the momentum and points swing.

I must have missed that touchdown catch.

He single handedly cost us that game. That was a turning point and he overplayed his ability. Take that miffed punt away and UGA is left with no touchdown and LSU puts up at least three or seven points. That would have been good enough for the win.

Woulda, shoulda, coulda...you can what-if yourself to death (what if Gurly had played the entire game...do you think the game would have been this close)? We lost because of one thing...we couldn't stop 'em.

It was pretty critical. Did that play by itself lose the game, no.

My post in another thread:

quote:

I'm actually not trying to absolve the defense from blame. They played terribly for most of the game and couldn't stop Georgia on the ground or in the air. But they did manage to make Georgia punt that time. And instead of getting a break while the offense took over, they had to go right out on the field again with a very short field.

There is no guarantee that the offense would have scored if OBJ hadn't fumbled. But I do know they didn't have a chance to go ahead by two scores the rest of the game because that was the last stop the D was able to make.

I love OBJ. He had a great game. He is an amazing player, but he has done this before and it is inexcusable. If he called for a fair catch and muffed the punt, I would chalk it up to a simple mistake. But he was trying to make a play when it was more important to secure possession.

But again, not to put all the blame on OBJ, because we did come back, and then I felt a lot of the blame is on Chief for going into a prevent D.

It changed the game. Our d got off the field, and we gave it back them. The crowd really got charged up from that point.

OBJ is a great player, however, he needs to let the plays come to him instead of trying to make something that is not there. Earlier in the game he stood two feet from a punt, and while I know he was not going to touch it, he put himself in a bad position. A Georgia player could have pushed him into it and may have gotten away with it.

He is still a great player and will make plenty of great plays. With the rugby punting and new kickoff rules, OBJ needs a lot of patience, and I'm sure with his talent he wants to make something happen.

All this. This year, as great as it is to have a big return, it's FAR more important that we keep possession of the ball because our offense is capable of scoring from anywhere on the field, and the last thing we want to do is put our defense right back on the field after they've forced a punt. At some point, someone is going to have to get this point into his ear...it's far better to fair catch and start a fresh set of downs than risk a turnover.

With Beck, it's just poor decisions and not a talent issue. That ball slammed of his grill because he was looking to make a move on a guy that was already in his lap as the ball was coming down.

I think this is the most important fact.

When constructively criticizing LSU's play, the defense must be at the top of the list.

If you want to delve into the world of hypercritical, I find it ironic that OBJ can catch kickoffs one handed (sort of hot doggish, if you ask me), yet have a punt hit his facemask, because he won't fair catch it (another hot dog move, if you ask me again).

That punt gave away the game. Right there we were gaining momentum. I was saying that all we needed was one stop the way our offense way playing. We got that one stop, then gave the ball right back to them. I didn't blame the D for giving up that TD, they were demoralized.

I mean, it was just something we couldn't have at that spot. That's how razor thin the margin between success and failure in a game like this is.

At that point, I knew the chance for a win was dismal. We didn't have enough time to absorb that mistake.

I still believe in Beckham. Hopefully he uses this as a chance to take his game to another level, and that would be scary. Failure is just another opportunity to grow.

I said before the game that the team who made a big mistake like that would lose. And it's true. It wasn't "boneheaded" or anything, just a pure mistake. But plays like that make the difference in games like yesterday.

It was the deciding factor.

THIS!

the muffed punt evened the turnover ratio: 1-1
each team getting a td.
