I agree that you should not play for a BCS Championship if you aren't the best in your conference. If you're not the best in your conference, how can you be the best in the country.
Not so fast my friend....
What if the #1 team IS in your conference? Does this change the rule? It is possible for #2 to be better than everyone else in the country (outside of their conference) and not be the best in their conference. Thus, they could possibly be awarded a shot.

I say if VT wins its conference with only one loss we should play them. We will have played or beaten everyone else that matters already.

Good point hophead but we beat Bama at their house. They should not be included in this discussion because of that simple fact.
And what happens if LSU tanks a game? They beat the 2 and 3 so does that mean LSU gets the nod over both? Seems to me we should just have to beat Ole Miss and let Bama play for the SEC title. Why even bother risking it and who cares if we beat Arkansas? Of course I am being fecetious, but WTF? At least allow LSU to play a team they didn't beat already.

who says BAMA is #2? computers? polls? you can just say one team is better than another. they have to play (which is why most sports have playoffs).
every time you have this thought, think of Ohio State and Michigan in 2006. they were #1 and #2. all the media wanted a rematch, but Florida got the nod. 41-14 Florida.
Just cause you think a team is better than another one, doesnt mean its true.

LSU deserves a shot and will likely get one if they lose to Arky or the SECCG.
Notre Dame can be a BCS champ without being a conference champ.
