There should never be “waste pitches”. You never waste a pitch, everyone should have a purpose.
I was listening to the game on the radio so idk for sure but I’d be willing to bet that Garza was either set up inside or set up high because that’s how you use a high velocity fastball in an 0-2 situation.
If it’s high the hitter can’t catch up to it and it sets up the breaking ball down. If it’s inside the hitter still can’t catch up to it and it sets up down and away.
A fastball is generally going to generate a swing on an 0-2 count so you want to place it out of the zone in a place the hitter can’t get to it. Swings set up hitters better than takes do.
I LOVE the 0-2 fastball I think it’s the best pitch in baseball but you have to get it out of the zone. Hess somehow managed to leave it across the plate.
I wish he would’ve gotten a couple more across the plate on the batter before the homerun

Guess I would have used Skip's philosophy... waste it low and away in the dirt when you have a batter on the ropes! never a fast ball down the gut!
College hitters are much more advanced today. A breaking ball low and away on an 0-2 count is extraordinarily predicable and an easy take that doesn’t set anything up for the rest of the at bat. This isn’t Dixie Youth.

So you really think that Dunn called for a fastball middle middle? Or do you think, just maybe, that its more plausible Hess missed his spot?

And after the 0-1 97mph fastball made the hitter look silly, you have to go back to the fastball 0-2

He threw 97 the for the second strike and made the batter look silly. After seeing that you absolutely should go back to the fastball, just have to locate better
You know nothing about pitching and hitting if you believe this

It was obscene. Almost like he was throwing batting practice, or throwing the game. Fastballs high in the zone asking to be pounded.
I never heard of home runs off 0-2 counts before this year, but it's becoming the New Normal with this team.

Yes, 96 at the shoulders is a waste pitch. He didn’t locate and left it right down the middle.

There. Is. No. Such. Thing. As. A. Wast. Pitch.

And he had been sitting 93-94 at that point. The 0-1 pitch was up to 97. The HR was 96 to a batter that had only 1HR all season prior. Even if he makes decent contact you dont expect a HR there

I don't have the stats to prove or disprove it, but seems like we give up more than the usual number of home runs w/ 0-2 and 1-2 counts. It also feels like we give up a lot of HR's to batters (like this one) who don't normally hit HR's.

I don’t know if this is correct or not but it definitely seems correct as far as Hess is concerned.
I wonder if it’s his sheer confidence that is causing it. I think he believes he can run his fastball by anyone in any location because he thinks it’s just that good.
Now I could be totally wrong because I have zero data but that’s what it feels like

Not sure why Dunn doesn’t call the curve more with Hess. I believe the his curve should be his out pitch.
