first, yes here's to LSU winning out.

I think the concept of quality wins is easy to standardize.

you get points for the wins of the team you beat.
you get 1/2 points for the wins of the teams
the teams you beat beat.
and on down.
1/4 point for the next level
down, down to 1/8th, 16th/32nd, 64th and 1/128th.
It adds up.

If you played losers you get no addition points except for the 1 point for beating that team.
If you played a couple of 10-2 teams, you are going to get a lot of points, especially if they also played strong teams.

If you like bigger numbers you can start with 100,000.
You need 13 levels.
Some teams will play conference championships.

First, I'll concede I may not really understand what you are proposing here, but it looks to me to be just a variation of calculating a SOS. I don't have any issue with this. I always thought that the old BCS SOS should have given more emphasis to the top half of the schedule rather than an average of the whole. However, neither really measures the intent of the 2003 quality win which was to give a bonus for specifically beating a high quality team.

The fundamental problem with the quality win is that it is highly dependent on timing and circumstance. By timing I mean when did you play them? For example, in 2007 when we played Virginia Tech their offense was an order of magnitude worse than ours is this year. Because this was Crowton's 1st year and the fact that we didn't show anything in the MSU game, defensively they were confused as hell. This was not the team that ended up in the top 5 or so at the end of the year.

Was this really a quality win? What would you base it on? Results over the year, or perceptions at game time? There just isn't a good way.

By circumstances I include injuries, weather, etc. Say Cam Newton goes down on the first play against Bama and Bama wins handily. Would Bama really deserve a bonus?

SOS, modified as you will, is really the best and fairest approach imo.

I doubt whether BSU or TCU could win those games. But, would they be in a position to play such games if they were not given pre-season head starts as well as having 0 degree of difficulty in the regular season?

Not likely...

believe me when i say the utah attn general asking for a bcs investigation at this time in the season is not accidental. it is washington trying to influence the outcome of the nc participants.

It is difficult for me not to conclude that there is substantial manipulation by the PTB...

Let's note that the SEC, Big-12, and ACC voted for a 4 team playoff.
