Let's assume YOU are the head coach of the LSU Fighting Tigers and you're late into 4th qtr of game on Sat. night in Tiger Stadium and you are desperately trying to achieve another miracle victory against non-conference opponent. Probably been brought up a few times but I'm still curious on what the RANTERS would have done.

What do you do on drive needing to get TD/FG to get w/I 1 score?

Here's what happened:
1. Orgeron used 1st timeout on 4th down to keep game "hopes" of victory alive. Can't really argue w that - but I will.

2. Orgeron used 2nd timeout to stop clock from running after crossing route in middle of field goes nowhere. Issue w that timeout BIG time.

3. Orgeron calls for onsides kick after TD. Really NO other choice at this point.......

Coach DrD's take:
1. Maybe call timeout here b/c game is on the line. You don't get 1st down it's ballgame. I get that but I also look at Troy rushing 3 linemen and everyone else deep protecting sidelines. A SENIOR QB behind center and it's a NO brainer anyway - take the snap and wait for opening and run for 1st down, which is exactly what Etling did anyway. However, a timeout was BURNED. Not on MY watch.

2. Play call over the middle sucked but a timeout here? WTF? Pretty much doomed the Tigers to onside kick if TD/FG. Now your chances of victory are under the "slim and none" category. Oh well...... My strategy: F the timeout. Let the clock roll.

3. Now we score TD. Yeah! LSU has 3 timeouts remaining with maybe 90 seconds or so on play clock. Opportunity for onside kick is still there. However, now there is also opportunity to pooch kick or kick to end zone. With 3 timeouts left you get the ball back with say 60 seconds left around the 35 yard line. Eternity in college football w clock stoppage on every 1st down. Tigers march down field and streak for most home field non-conference victories EVER in college football is alive and very, very well! GEAUX TIGERS!

What you got? Agree/Disagree/Don't give a crap anymore?

I'd try not to be down 24-7 to Troy with 8 minutes left in the 4th quarter.

+1. Amazing how Etling took them right down the field when he couldn't do that the entire game. A QB is college has to be able to run when the opportunity is there. He did that on TD drive. That was impressive but a little too late. Hope he uses that asset moving forward!

Drives me nuts!

Must be in context that in that situation they are keeping everything in front of them AND routes are deeper, opening up that field for running.

However, if you have deep passing established can do the same, less often, during course of game using WRs as vertical clear out (and a TE crossing to do a lateral clear out).

One reason your more pass happy teams will run draws and screens on 3rd and long. The threat is already there.

For starters I think its absolutely stupid to onside kick that first time to begin with. Down 10 with over 7 minutes to play and 3 time outs. There was no need to onside kick.

I started cursing in the stands when they came out the first time with it, but I thought...OK they just tried to catch them off guard. Surely after Troy used a time out, there is no way we onside kick it after the time out. And then...BOOM. I think this is actually the point where I 100% jumped off the O pain train.

I didn't mind the first TO bc if you don't convert Troy is in scoring range. Didn't like the second TO and you save more time even if you snap at :20 or :15 on the play clock than when Troy takes it down to :03 or less. We could've spiked too.
