I'll keep this shorter than I did on Tigerbait or TSD . But after rewatching every defensive play a few times, I think the problem was much more scheme than personnel.

We blitzed almost every 3rd down in the first three quarters, they were just horribly designed and executed. We had Alem either dropping in coverage, or having to stunt inside to make room for a blitzer. He rarely got to use his edge speed until the 4th quarter. Same for Nevis, he wasn't freed up until the 4th quarter.

The reason our defense played better at the end is bc we let our DL get after it! Alem and Nevis are studs, we may not need to blitz so much to have a good pass rush.

I'm telling you, we were being too exotic, and not putting our best players in a position to succeed. If we simply let Alem and Nevis get after the QB, we'll be much better than we were on defense. But if we stick with the same 3 man defensive line and zone blitzing we did on Saturday, then Chavis is an idiot.

But I will say this, Chavis definitely has Cutrera and Sheppard playing better football. He's definitely a good LB coach. And despite what everyone is saying, Haley has Woods playing much better than he ever has before.

If we just stick to basics, a simple 4 man rush with timely blitzes, I think we'll be a good defense again.

I agree with the addition that we need to focus on tackling during pratice this week. If we wrap up, that was a different game.

A little zone blitzing is fine.

He needs to cut out the 3 man rush though. I know that it was a staple for Tennessee, but he didn't have Alem and Nevis there the last few years either. He doesn't need to trick people as much here.

Zone blitzing will get us no more than 7 wins this year. If you have the talent and speed you need to Bring it...our man coverage will hold up more often than not.

Thanks. I had similar thoughts. How about the secondary? How would you break that down?

He threw some nice balls," Sarkisian said. "He moved well in the pocket. He kept his eyes up. And that's a good defense, now. That team is going to be competing for an SEC championship, possibly a national championship, and they've got really good players. I'm proud of Jake's performance."

bullshite. Pep Levingston needs to be covering RBs in space to utilize his 6.2 40 speed.

PP was as good as everyone is saying. I downplayed him this offseason a little bc I didn't think he played that well last year, but he definitely looks ready for a great year. He's certainly talented enough to be a top 10 NFL pick after his Junior year.

Besides that, not good enough. Chad needs to tackle better. I thought Brandon Taylor made a good play or two, which was nice to see. Jai gave up a big play, but actually had pretty decent coverage on it. Hawkins still gives too big of cushions. Hopefully they keep giving Jai the opportunity to compete with Hawk. McCray is McCray, but won't be exposed as much in this scheme. This unit can play better than they did.

Not totally. I've seen a ton of bashing of players like Woods and Alem over the last 24 hours, which is undeserved.

That was painful to watch.

Just as bad though was watching Alem drop into coverage about 7-8 times, just for the privledge of allowing McCray or someone else to easily get picked up by the RB.

Isn't this what Pelini did against ASU back in 05? And remember the following week a below average Rick Clausen carved up or defense. You would think by now that Les would have learned his lesson.

Nothing will make Miles ever stop playing soft defense and running right up the middle 70% of the time on offense.

We had Alem either dropping in coverage

I've been saying this for the last couple of days. The use of Alem was one of my biggest complaints with Chavis' scheme.

#1. Why the hell was he on the SS?? (His weakness is definitely playing the run anyway)
#2. Why was he standing up??
#3. Why the frick was he dropping back in coverage??

Once Alem was put back on the WS (where he belongs and has excelled), our defense got A LOT BETTER IMO...

And several times he was confused and totally out of position.
