The grand jury, which was sworn in on April 20, is made up of 25 jurors from Jackson County, ranging in age from 27 to 68. Twelve jurors are White, five are Black, one is Asian, two are Hispanic, two are Native American and another identified as “other,” according to the report. Jurors issued 132 subpoenas and heard from 43 witnesses as part of their investigation. Seven individuals were called to testify before the grand jury. The jury also had full access to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office investigation into Wells’ death, including witness testimony, cell phone records, and videos and recordings. The grand jury heard testimony from the forensic pathologist Wells’ family retained to conduct an independent autopsy and requested all additional evidence gathered by the family’s legal team, according to the report.
