For those who claim that Chavis can't defend the spread....

TENN VS FLA
-243 yards of TOTAL OFFENSE 30 pts
Everyone agrees that Nick Saban is a great defensive coach. Probably the best out there. This is how he fared against the same team WITHOUT PERCY HARVIN
-358 yards of Total Offense 31 pts
Saban vs the Gators
Take your emotion out of the equation and look at Chavis. This is a great hire for LSU.
All the Dick Bumpass supporters. HE DOESN'T EVEN DESIGN THE DEFENSE. Patterson does.
This is the name you wanted @ LSU.

You would run in to the same problem with Walker that we had with Pelini. The guy is going to be a HC. The fact that Chavis has been a DC for 15 years bodes well for the Tigers. Consistency in scheme is definitely a good thing.

Agreed. Having the 4th rated D in the country was especially impressive this year when you consider the fact that they played a tougher schedule than LSU AND had a horrific offense. That defense spent WAY too much time on the field and still delivered.

When Chavis has talent, he's been proven to be pretty good.
I was surprised to see the ESPN article call his defenses "attacking". If they are, this is a better hire than I thought yesterday.
I only get to see TN play 1 or 2 games a year so I don't have alot of first hand knowledge of how he schemes.
Although the total def numbers have been down for TN lately, that's much more a product of the talent they have IMO.
I'm upa for the hire.

Walker vs his elite opponent
Since I compared Chavis to FLA, its only fair I compare Walker to USC (A good offense).
-478 total yards
1) FLA is better than SC this year
2) Don't use the less talent excuse as UCLA beat TENN
3) Bring on any other suggestions of a better hire

Another good point. That's one of the reasons that I liked the Crowton hire, he's another "career coordinator" type. Could see Chavis and Crowton here for a good while. Of course, with stability in the coaching staff, the rantards won't have as much to talk about. We'll probably see an exponential increase in "ESPN hates LSU" type posts.

Maximus definitely needs to read these stats...

Chavis best years are when Tenn. has a good OC (See Coach Cut), we have that at LSU with the Wiz. This will be a great fit.

They had a horrible offense this year w/ the 4th overall D in the country. Makes Chavis look even better.

I did too, but I like the Chavis hire.

I don't know much on Chavis but I have heard a lot of Tenn fans say he goes into prevent in the 4th with a lead. If that is the case, looking good for 3 quarters will get us no where if you give up big plays and momentum at the end of the game. Whats the word on this, anyone?

PPL used to say the same thing about Saban. See Ark in 2002. I think a lot of coaches tend to do that sometimes. Pelini vs Ark last year ring a bell. No pressure on Dick on that 4th down play. He is a great DC who will put us in the best possible position to win.

meh, he's a good hire and the defense will be good enough to win. he's a clear downgrade from pelini though so it probably won't be long before LSU fans want his head
Posted on 12/29/08 at 2:27 pm to TulaneTigerFan
Please explain how he is a downgrade vs Pelini. I would say they are very comparable and Chavis has done it longer in a tougher conf.
Pelini had the 65th total defense this yr with a much better team.
Tenn. as Chris Low reported had the 4th.
"I'm not saying, I'm just saying."
