Didn’t really know much about him at the time of his hiring. Now with Kiffin we know what he’s accomplished, especially the past few years.

Most people thought that we were taking a chance with Saban because his record wasn’t that great at MSU. He got the job because he beat OSU, Penn State, and Michigan in his last year and had them ranked in top 10.

I was college and thrilled about it. Knew he was going to be a good one.

This is another level though.

I remember several fans bringing up Saban's bowl record that he 0-3 including a loss (26–45) to Dinardo the coach he was replacing. MSU was again blown out (0-38) by Stanford in the Sun bowl. Next season lost to Washington (23–51) in the Aloha bowl. The following season misses out on a bowl game.

Saban record at MSU before the 99 season (9-2) was just a few games over 500% that 99 team did beat Flordia in a bowl game but LSU hired Saban as its coach in November so he did not coach in the bowl game.

So LSU hired a coach that did not win a bowl game in the last 5 seasons and yet to have a double digit win season. Very different situation with Kiffin.

You know the story about Amedee telling Saban at Michigan State to go to Louisiana and win a national championship. I pulled into Walmart when the Saban press conference started and sat in the parking lot for 30 minutes. I was excited then but not so excited now…..Saban built a wall and harvested home grown talent. Now with this NIL there’s less tradition and sense of regional pride.

Was hopeful but didn’t know too much about Saban other than he was proven head coach with a good defense and had been a DC in the NFL. Quickly found out with his 2001 recruiting class. Knew it was on from that point forward.

It seemed like an aight hire…but no one thought it was a home run.

There was no certainty that Saban would be great at LSU, and we were coming out of a big disappointment with Dinardo’s rise and fall.

Then he lost to UAB in Baton Rouge during his first season.

The 2001 season I started to feel good about what was happening. I went to the SECC game and remember at a point in the 2nd half being in disbelief that LSU was beating Tennessee and doing it handily, with the backup QB.

For much older fans...the Bo Rein hire was like this. Coach Bo would have been welcomed by any program, just like CLK.

I’ve been an LSU fan for 50 years and I was feeling the same way. I watched very little football this year. But this hire has pulled me back in just as I was about to just bow out completely.
