So D's can ID eligible receivers

In NFL, you will regularly hear the referee call out eligible receivers (including O-tackles).

7 or 8 or whatever or on LOS or not...it is all about ID'ing eligible receivers

I understand what you’re saying, though you’re describing a very different formation. I guess part of my question is how does #8 taking half a step back really change anything, in the specific situation I’m talking about. If the logic is, it’s pure signaling of who’s eligible/ineligible to the defense (and has nothing to do with the actual formation), then I guess that’s the answer.
