Last two decades LSU has played twice for national title winning two in decade ending 2010 and winning one, losing one in decade ending 2020.

I think that is a reasonable goal, playing in national title game twice a decade. Probably need to step it up with more playoff appearances as a one loss team where things break your way.

LSU's problem is the schedule. It would be nice to line up with a Clemson or Oklahoma schedule to make it easier access to playoffs. It makes it harder when you have to play Fla every year and your main west opponent gets Tenn. That means you have to win the tiebreaker every year with Bama to move on in West.

I'd prefer to have exciting, competitive games throughout the season with the occasional playoff appearance, than sleep through a Clemson type season.

I agree
The Fla game this year was a really good atmosphere
Just need Saban to retire and Tenn to improve so LSU can make it in as a one loss team like Bama has done

Given the way we're recruiting, I think a New Year's Six bowl game each year should be the minimum, with a serious playoff run occurring every 3 years or so. LSU can lock up a NY6 bowl bid by going 10-2 each year, which is definitely reasonable.

A lot of it is going to come down to the way the team executes on the field. 10-2 is palatable if we're scoring points, looking good, and losing games by relatively close margins. It becomes far less satisfying if we go back to averaging 25 points a game and getting blown out by Alabama each year.

Yeah thinking about this post I was reminded of the lull between Texas and UF... and that was only 3 games with a bye. Was pretty miserable waiting for UF.

For 2020:

Win games.

Compete.

Rebuild and reload.

Don't increase my season ticket prices exorbitantly.

No lower than second in the west and winning the west at least once every 3 years sounds reasonable to me. Once you win the west then it is 3 one game seasons to win a national championship. Anything can happen in those 3 games.

That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t go into every season expecting a national championship. My expectation for the program as a whole is separate from my expectations for every season. Three seasons without a SEC Championship game appearance moving forward is a failure as a program in my opinion.

yeah not getting blown out (not that I expect that) is important... for carrying the momentum from this season and for establishing ourselves as a top tier dominant program underwritten with elite recruiting.

The way the system works, well will get more of a chance at the playoff now that we’ve been there and won in the playoff system. We will get more benefit of the doubt as a 1 loss team

One loss that’s a close game will still give us a very good shot at the playoff depending on the types of teams in the hunt year to year. I have no doubt Bama would’ve made it in this year with an Auburn win

Just stay fricking entertaining. That's all.

I remember telling my friends and family after the GaSouthern game this year:

"This is the offense we have been told for years was coming. It is here. This is the Saints offense, which means we will be in any game, any time. Winning, losing, doesn't matter. We may lose 3-4 games this year, I don't care. We will be fun to watch again".

No more changing the channel during an LSU game because it's a tractor pull. I'm happy.

And after the GOAT CFB season ever, don't care what happens the next 50 years.

The general guidelines imo:

10-2 is always the bar for success.

9-3 is par.

8-4 or worse is regression and cause for serious concern.

Now, had we gone 10-2 this year, even though it is “successful” by program standards, we all would have known it was underachieving.

By that same token, going 10-2 next year, considering this past year and what we lost, would actually be a bit of overachieving and O would deserve a lot of praise and would be a great indicator for the direction of the program.

But 9-3 is and has always been the bare minimum for a program that wants to be considered a powerhouse imo, and only once every few years can you drop to that level with the talent we have if you truly want to be considered elite.

10-2 plus a NY6 bowl victory would be a great season next year setting up 2021 to be a playoff run.

Agree. I think we go 11-1 next year or 10-2 at worst. If I had to pick the two regular season losses I'd guess Florida and Bama. If I had to pick 1 I'd say Florida because it's on the road

LSU has NEVER won the SECW division in an even-year. It's not just that LSU's schedule is harder, it's that everyone else's schedule is easier. In contrast, LSU has dominated the odd # years:

Odd # Years, SECW Champions, 2000 - present:
LSU - 6
AU - 2
Ala - 2

Is Arkansas in 06 the only other team to win the West?

ETA: Ark in 02 as well.

Factor in odd and even:

Alabama 7
LSU 6
Auburn 5
Arkansas 2

Also interesting to note that Florida has only made it from the East in odd years in 2009 and 2015. Basically whoever wins that game, it’s hard for the other team to make it to Atlanta.

Same with Auburn and UGA. They’ve only met up once in Atlanta, in 2017, and LSU and Florida never have.

If only Auburn, Texas A&M - and others - didn't have anything to say about it. TAM is getting better, Auburn is always tough and the others won't stay down forever.
