Actually, ESPN was in on the discussion but didn't have any real "say so" Jinkens wanted it canceled, luckily LSU officials got his mind changed and moved the time and once ESPN confirmed they could do the 1000 game then everything was set...as far as the football game, the LSU Athletic Staff and LSU office did an outstanding job, and really thank ESPN, they had all their equipment already here and setup and the game could have seriously been "postponed" (canceled, we would have never made it up) if LSU didn't have the "we'll lose this much money in Television contracts and future SEPT games" argument to the GOV

Piano, do you agree that cancellation was never seriously on the menu?

Sounds to me like Piano's account is right in the middle of mine and Sports2's. So that's 3 different accounts. What's yours?

Not for LSU..or ESPN..according to my source.. Actually, he is a high TAF official, served with him in Iraq before he got out and became a dentist in Baton Rouge, he said the the Gov office called the TAF president and the Athletic Dept to "just let them know that the game was canceled" Evidently that didn't go so well. Next thing he knew he was called in (with about 8 other TAF members) from work to a meeting with State Officials, Police Department, ESPN (spectators) no real say so, and LSU and the compromise was set. The State department keep harping on mandatory evacuation of New Orleans 60 hours before the storm touched shore and according to their evidently pathetic weather man, that is 6 p.m. Saturday and they didn't want a log jam in Baton Rouge.
Bottom line, I think it shows how "powerful" LSU really is..the Gov calls and says cancel..LSU says let's talk..Gov leaves with his tail between his legs with a "compromise". Don't get me wrong, I think that human lives are far more important; however, get good information before jumping to conclusion. Just my opinion. But the above is true and about all I know. Have fun watching the game, I'll be following on gametrax here in Grafenwoehr, Germany!

Thanks for the clarification. I'm looking at the email I got and it doesn't say that "ESPN decided", it says that LSU really really cared about having the game televised and that cancellation wasn't an option, so they went with the earlier time (i.e. it was an "ESPN decision", not "ESPN's decision" - I apologize for mistating it earlier). I agree that Jindal did not make the call.

Yeah I think it was a homeland security thing, with a checklist type of thing..60 hours before 6pm saturday..someone says "there's a football game on" State Staff guy says, "cancel it" that call gets made..state staff guy doesn't know what he has just done..Governor agrees or disagrees doesn't really matter..I do believe though that LSU wasn't going to cancel no matter what..

ESPN didn't have anything to do with this decision. You might need new sources.

It was pretty much Bobby saying don't play, his advisers and LSU saying we can play, how about this time.

Actually it was a mutual decision by state police, local law, state emergency preparedness,LSU and the gov. office. Law enforecement agencies need a minimum of 4-6 hours to start implementing contraflow. They asked to move the game up and LSU along with ESPN offered this as the earliest start they could get by with. This gives the law plenty of time to get the folks out of BR and have contraflow if they need to start it. No collision of traffics. That will smooth(as much as it can be) the evacuation.

You are about as stupid as that other jerk that said Lsu should refund money. What the hell is wrong with you people.

I talked to my guy again, this is what he said:

The decision to play earlier was made based on traffic, not weather per se. Mandatory evac in the coastal parishes by sun down Sunday (up to local governments, but they are going to do it.)

ESPN and App state were both very worried about getting their own people out. There was not going to be a televised game at 4PM.

Very unlikely that Jindal just called and said the game was off as per several reports.

The game didn't even come up until 2 hours into the meeting. (Not a priority)

ESPN voiced different options for different times. Various govt depts had already voiced concerns about open date issues, so postponement was difficult.

The phrase "preserve our national ranking" came up. LSU playing on TV was a big concern of LSU.

Because it really makes sense to send people from New Orleans West when the storm is heading that way.
