SEC football is mostly regional. There is no marquee, big-name team that draws big ratings consistently.

I can't argue with you on that, except to say that I think they could pick and choose a few more night games and be successful. Certainly not every week, but 3 or 4 per season seems reasonable, instead of 1 a year.

SEC football is mostly regional. There is no marquee, big-name team that draws big ratings consistently. Sure, the unbelievably big game will be a big draw. But if CBS went primetime with, say, a Tennessee/Alabama game and went head-to-head with ESPN/ABC's primetime Notre Dame, USC, Michigan, or Ohio State, they'd get their asses kicked in most of the major television markets in the United States. Because, as you may or may not know, there aren't really any big television markets outside of Atlanta in SEC country.

Yeah it's the reason CBS and ESPN pay more for the rights to play SEC football than any other conference in the country.

I would think any game that involves an SEC team. But to me it still seems like they should get more 1st picks.

I wasn't quite clear on the contract. So EVERY LSU game vs and SEC Opp. will always be on espn if not cbs? If this is the case, it is a pretty sweet deal. Tired of missing some of them.

I swear he hates us, and we always do horrible when on CBS.

That's just the recent bad memories of '08 preying on your mind. Prior to last year Verne has called many a great Tiger victory during this past decade. Here's to a slough of big CBS victories in '09.

Fine. You're right. LSU and Florida would outdraw the Notre Dames, Michigans, and USCs in television markets like New York, Boston, Philly, Detroit, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle. I stand corrected.

So espn signs the biggest contract in collegiate sports history with the conference and does not have a BIG SEC rivalry matchup listed yet???They are probably just waiting closer to the season, but it is dissapointing to see LSU not listed her yet. I know they will pick up a few, but it would be nice to know earlier this year rather than the week before(helps with tailgaiting preperation). Here is the ESPN schedule for the upcoming season... I think the LSU/WASH game would be a good way to start.

Well, besides for a few BIG BIG games the majority of the Saturday night games (ESPN, ESPN2, ABC) have not been assigned. That is a good thing...

Just one other example with CBS and the SEC. You may recall that back in the day CBS had the SEC and the Big East. In the mid-late 90s there was no more important game than Tennessee/Florida. I don't remember the exact year in question, but CBS moved the game to primetime. However, they split the audience, and the rest of the country got a crappy Michigan/Syracuse game. That speaks volumes about how television executives "view" college football. They denied half the population of the U.S. the most important game of the year because they decided that a meaningless Michigan game could draw a bigger audience.

There are certain teams that are certainly larger draws. Hence why every game for USC is on ABC at night and the fact that Notre Dame has their own network.

But the simple fact of the matter is that the SEC outdraws the other conferences consistently. The SEC isn't a regional draw. All games aren't equal. Notre Dame playing USC is one thing. Notre Dame playing San Diego St. when LSU/UF is on is another.

Exactly, this is what I am saying. CBS should strategically have 3 or 4 primetime games. Look for some weeks where they don't have to compete with USC/ND or Mich/OSU.

I just hope the shite doesn't turn out the way it did last year. The quarterback situation and shotty defense notwithstanding, I have to place some of the blame for the way the season went down on the fact that we played Georgia, Alabama, and Ole Miss at 2:30.

Just go the games when they are scheduled to be played, be it 7 pm or 2 pm or 7 am for that matter.

Nothing you can do about it so why fret over something you have no control over?

I know, i know...because its the RANT !

The reason LSU played many games at 2 30 is because they were the defending national champion. In case you dont get it, playing at 2:30 is a GOOD sign for your program. It means someone wants to put you on NATIONAL television on a BROADCAST network.

No, that's good for your reputation and as a marker for your PAST success. This was obvious already. The reason that LSU has a losing record during day games is because it upsets a fan's ritual. If you're tired or sober, a fan won't be as raucous, a key element to the Death Valley ambiance. Which is BAD thing. Last year, the team wasn't the same not only because of the departure of Pelini, but because the fans weren't the same. There was no fire or intensity from anyone in Death Valley for any game last season.
