I didnt play but went to Central Lafourche. It was a down year for us. I best player at the time was a sophomore, Lucas Leblanc. He was committed here but chose to go pro this summer with the Red Sox

I'm pretty sure they make some profit ,but it's not as much as most of us would think. Data was shown on here a few years back.

Yep. I remember seeing the data a year or so ago. There were only a few teams that made any profit; the profit the teams made was underwhelming to say the least.

The actual number may not be impressive, but any profit from a sport that's not football or men's basketball is huge when you factor in the operating expenses.

Do baseball players get free rides? I know for a long time only partial scholarships were given.

after title 9, the sports money has been split with the women.

thereafter, programs had to decide which male sports to support.
I recall that West Virginia, which has a few NCAA national championships in riflery, dropped riflery.
WV young men hunt and enjoy riflery in real life.

Tsk.

I think the only three profitable sports at LSU are baseball, football, and men's bball. Can't confirm that with a link however.

Todd walker is the only player to ever get a full ride in baseball, rightfully so
One of Smoke's guys Bryan Harris was just about a full ride. Things didn't work out so he went back to California.

Cooperative Endeavors - Expansion of Tiger Stadium
On December 21, 1998, LSU entered into a cooperative endeavor agreement with TAF for an
addition to the east side of Tiger Stadium. TAF agrees to lease a parcel of land located adjacent
to Tiger Stadium for up to 50 years and to construct additional seats on the land as part of Tiger
Stadium, including approximately 70 skyboxes. LSU will lease these stadium improvements
from TAF for $2 million per year for a 35-year lease term or until TAF donates such
improvements to LSU. The estimated value to LSU of this addition over the term of the
agreement is approximately $49 million. The cooperative endeavor agreement will end on
April 4, 2049.
On September 26, 2003, LSU entered into a cooperative endeavor agreement with TAF for the
expansion and renovation of the west side of Tiger Stadium. TAF agrees to lease land and
certain existing improvements for expanding and renovating facilities and to complete general
stadium improvements. Effective September 1, 2005, LSU leased these improvements from
TAF for $2.5 million per year for a 35-year lease term or until TAF donates such improvements
to LSU. The estimated value to LSU of this addition over the term of the agreement is
approximately $100 million. This agreement is scheduled to expire on March 31, 2041.

Found that interesting.......

And also the relatively small amount of money spent on Men's basketball recruiting (Less than half of women's BBall)!!!

The average Division I baseball team loses over $600k a year, more than the loss per team in any other men's sport, according to the NCAA. LINK

I remember reading that Cal cut it's baseball program after they were averaging losses of $1M per year.

And yes, LSU does turn a profit in baseball. Per Alleva: LINK
quote:

The three sports that make a profit at the University are football, baseball and men's basketball, with football making up the majority of the profit.

LSU turns a profit mainly due to leading the nation in attendance by a wide margin:
1. LSU 10,655 404,916
2. Arkansas 7,549 286,895
3. Ole Miss 6,818 231,818
4. South Carolina 6,710 241,582
5. Texas 6,571 256,278

Actually all baseball programs are allowed 11.5 schollys per year. It has not changed as far as I know since the 60's when I played. Coaches can give full rides if they want to but once the 11.5 is exhausted you're on your own.

There was a point midway through last season when 18 of the top 20 attendance figures were at the Box. And the other two were one-off games at major stadiums.

11.7 and the rosters have been trimmed. You have to be a fricking wizard to make all of that shite work when you're singing top classes

I believe the baseball team is allocated 12.76 scholarships. Although I am not sure if this is an NCAA rule or an LSU policy.

Comparing it to football, they gets 87 scholarships.

Yes, the baseball hierarchy has to work a lot of magic to keep a full roster every year.

that's why the coaches are very happy when they get a very good baseball player on the baseball team with a football scholarship (i.e. Jarred Mitchell, Chad Jones, Spencer Ware).

LSUdm21 you are right, it is 11.76 scholarships, but for some reason LSU has 12.76 on scholarship.
I think I heard somewhere that LSU has or had an extra baseball scholarship to give out. But I think we will be losing that extra one this year or next.
