Only reason is PM not a great coach. Good but not great. LSU needs great
Explain what about PM isn't great. Is it the fact that we're a top 8 national seed for the third year in a row? The fact that we're still just 1 win away from hosting a third straight super regional? The fact that we won 8 straight to get into a position to host after we were perceived to be dead in the water?
We can second guess every little move until we're blue in the face. His results speak for themselves. If you aren't happy with the state of our program, that's a you problem, not a Mainieri problem.

He's a great manager and coach and I'm happy to have him. I just wish he hadn't left McCun in for the 8th and went matchups instead with a 4-0 lead to get to the closer in the 9th or even in the 8th if the others struggled..
Again I am happy he's here.

I dunno, but I'd certainly trust the highly-esteemed speculative opinions of rantards whose coaching experience stretched all the way to the upper reaches of Little League (maybe) over the decisions of one of the top coaches in all of NCAA baseball.

usually pm is a match up machine but last night he went gut with McCune. I really don't understand why he did it

Do you honestly think CPM/Dunn did not have a "backup plan"? These 2 guys do this for a living, this time of the season probably 24/7, and to think that neither were thinking ahead, not just pitch by pitch but inning by inning, game by game just shows how ignorant you are of what coaching actually entails. Coach Dunn watches video tape of a batter's swing, freezes it to study it, plans his strategy...on each batter in the lineup, days ahead of time.So he did not have a plan to in case McCune struggled? Their minds are so far ahead of each situation in every inning in every game it is scary. Yet, the ranters here get to live by 1000% hindsight.

I thought that same exact thing last night. Sometimes his gut pays off and sometimes it doesn't. Last night was just not the right "gut" felling.

Uh what? Yes we aren't coaches but that doesn't mean we are blind or that PM is infallible.
Btw based on PMs reaction and body language it sure seems like they had thought it all out ahead of time.(sarcasm included)
PM screwed the pooch. It happens. He is still a better coach than 100% of the rant.
The rant is still right in pointing out said pooch screwing.
They aren't mutually exclusive.

I keep waiting for someone to link a post where one solitary soul said Mainieri is infallible. He, like everyone else, makes decisions that he thinks are best at the time and they don't always work out. There isn't a coach in the history of baseball that makes nothing but perfect decisions.
Not second-guessing every single decision and not relying 100% on hindsight =/= believing Mainieri to be infallible.
I'm OK with giving some benefit of the doubt to the man.

You are on a board called the RANT.
Maybe this is the place to air this conversation?
Maybe?
Paul messed up last night dude. He's still a great coach. Both can happen at the same time.

You people still can't draw the line between "messed up" and "made a decision that just didn't happen to work out".
Not all good decisions work....and not all bad decisions fail.
This board is a good place for discussion in hindsight, of course. To say the coach "screwed up" or is an idiot is a bit much. Every move that has been scrutinized was done with some sort of logic and planning in mind. A couple of them just happened to not work out. shite happens.

CPM on last nights pitching decisions:
A very reasonable explanation. Bouman was never expected to go the distance. Could he have gone longer and been effective? Maybe. Maybe not. We don't know. The coaches see these guys way more than we do.
(This wasn't directed at you lol)

Honestly,PM could not have known Mc Cune would run into the damn base runner.
Take out that one bonehead mistake and LSU wins the game.

CPM has over-coached every team since he's been at LSU...this is just one more example...it's like he is trying to prove something...prove that he can out-fox the opposing coach or some bs such as that...it's not going to change either...sorry, Charlie!

Could it be possible that it was a decision that didn't work out and also a poor decision?
And this isn't 100% hindsight, taking Bouman out being a mistake has been talked about on here since the moment it happened.
Some are going overboard but damn dude, he was doing better against them than Nola did. Ride your horse man. It's fricking baseball not rocket science. I don't need a PhD in Saber metrics to realize the dude was pitching the game of his life and easily had 20-30 more pitches in him.
I feel like I'm rearguing why didn't Charles Scott play the second half of the Kentucky game in 2007 and all the Les backers telling me sometimes things just don't work out.
And sometimes good coaches make dumb choices.
Btw it is real easy to shut down the double guessing of Paul you don't like... Stop opening this thread.

Season over thanks to CPM's good decisions not working out. I'm glad he didn't make any mistakes.
