Saban was bot a good coach back then. Les Miles was actually better

so he wasn't a good coach in 2007 but went undefeated in the regular season with a halfway decent team a year later and a national title the year after that? Right

Yeah he blew the Championship game because of his ego and love for JJ

Everyone always says this like Les Miles is the only person that had any impact on that game How about we give a little credit to the other team which was loaded with NFL players, had a defense every bit as good as LSU and coached by the GOAT.

While Les’ offense was antiquated Urban Meyer’s was not and JJ was a below avg QB Tebow was arguably the best QB in SEC history at that point in time and in the 2009 SECCG, basically the same Bama defense (only 2 years younger!) held Florida to 335 yards and 13 points well below their season avg and shut them out in the 2H.

After seeing some clips from the 07 game against Ar-Kansas where they ran stupid against us all day long. Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, and Peyton Hillis. Do believe Saban would have been more prepared for what the Hogs were bringing that day?

The interesting part of that hypothetical is whether Flynn still gets injured against Arkansas, forcing LSU to go to a back-up QB. If Saban had been our coach, that back-up would not have been Perrilloux, as he was committed to Texas until Saban left. So, would we have had a good enough backup to win the SECCG? Because if we didn't, we don't win that championship.

2005 was a dirty team too.

05 Tennessee

I don't think there is a coach in America that a) could have won that Tennessee game or b) led LSU to the 2005 national title.

The recovery from Katrina impacted everything that happened on campus for over a month. The team was emotionally worn out by the time the Tennessee game happened, and while LSU did have a big halftime lead, that was one very tired team that night (which was rescheduled due to Rita.)

When you look at the whole season, you see that LSU was playing its 11th game in 10 weeks when it went to Atlanta. Again, I don't think there's a coach in America that would have won that game.

That's all setting aside whether Saban would have handled the season as well as Miles did. I personally think that 2005 Saban would have been very frustrated by the "distraction" of Katrina to the detriment of his coaching style. Yes, he would have learned, and seems to have by the time he had to deal with the aftermath of the 2011 Tuscaloosa tornado that came very close to hitting Bama's campus. Then again, the tornado was in April, so a lot of healing had already happened by the time football came around. Katrina, OTOH, was right at the beginning of the football season.

There’s a segment of fans that have always held that game against Miles because Tennessee went 5-6 and we had a 14 point lead, as if that’s some otherwise insurmountable lead. But as you note context matters. It was only the teams 2nd game because of postponements and games that had to be moved and was just a month after Katrina and a couple weeks after Rita. Clearly they were distracted and the lead was a mirage anyway due to 2 gift turnovers one a pick in the end zone. After that game they won 9 straight before running out of gas vs UGA in Atlanta. The rebounded in the bowl beating Miami so bad I’m not sure they’ve recovered

USC and Texas started 1-2 and ran the table, no one was passing either

nobody was jumping USC and Texas that year, if LSU happen to run the table they become ‘04 Auburn.

I disagree. I think if LSU runs the table that year they make the BCS numbers work and pull whatever they have to to put LSU in the NC to sell the story.
