That's stupid. Scholarships are an annual award that are renewable at the schools discretion. If an athlete is on scholarship, maintains their eligibility and fulfills the obligation on the field, then the school has received their consideration.

Once that athlete is no longer enrolled, the school is no longer obliged to pay for their tuition. But both sides got their agreed upon compensations. And that's in a semester by semester basis. If an athlete failed to maintain eligibility during the semester, or is kicked off the team in the middle of a semester, THEN they could be financially liable for repaying any dispersed amount for THAT semester.
