All for it if those guys prove to be good.

But we also have a lot of great bats (and guys with potential to be great bats) in CF.

So by moving Morgan to CF, you'd effectively eliminate one of those bats from your lineup.

I'm all for getting the best players on the field but I don't think moving Morgan to CF is a silver bullet for accomplishing that.

I like the idea of Morgan to be like Cody Bellinger someone that plays both positions so then you open 1B or CF to whoever the better hitter is at the time. I think that's the silver bullet. You may need Milazzo behind the plate so you get Mcmanus in at first and Morgan to CF. Or you go with Mcmanus catching, Morgan at 1B, and say Stevenson to CF.

Today? Considering we have not seen Pearson, Merrifield, Stevenson or Jobert take a swing - I'd pick Morgan and Gio.

Not sure this is a fair question considering that 4 of those guys ability to contribute this year is speculation at this point.

Then Gio would play CF and Morgan would play 1B.

If Gio struggles, then you either replace him with another OF and leave Morgan at 1B, or you choose another IF and put Morgan in CF. Plain and simple. It's a cost-benefit analysis. You value a run saving 1B. The cost to that may be a 3rd OF that doesn't hit well and leaving an IF that hits well on the bench. It's just very rare that you see a baseball team constructed in such a way to save runs with a 1B.

Merrifield and Jobert lit JUCO up, btw.

In a perfect world, we get to seem them all, they all do well, then we pick the best of the best.

Agreed. I am on board with getting the best lineup on the field so long as it doesn't mean having a liability defensively.

Beloso, Berry, Merrified, Jobert, and I'll even throw in Bianco. It could also be a landing spot for Travinski or McManus.
Sure, there’s a lot of possibilities, but you aren’t going to get all of them time there in the preseason regardless of whether Leto gets some innings there or not.

If Leto is going to redshirt this season, what is the purpose of him continuing to take innings away from guys that may need to play there this season?

I can hear it now: WHY ARE WE EXPERIMENTING NOW WHEN WE HAD ALL FALL AND PRESEASON BUT LET THE REDSHIRT HAVE ALL OF THE INNINGS?

I don't know if he's redshirting or not, though.

We have like 5 weekend games against SWAC competition, plus Maine and a few mid week scrubs. We will be "experimenting" for a while.

ETA: I hate our non-conference schedule

We also have La Tech, Oklahoma, Texas, Baylor, McNeese, Tulane. None of those will be pushovers. But, yes, we'll see shuffling for sure...but you'd hope it's shuffling to things that they've been doing.

We’re talking about controlled intersquad games here, if Johnson wants to get someone work there he can. He could be getting him time there for any number of reasons…because he’s still recovering and can’t play anywhere else, because he wants to see him to decide whether he has a roster spot or not, or because it’s the beginning of a potential position change.

And we’re definitely going to be experimenting for a while, anyone expecting otherwise is going to be severely disappointed. Every team does, and with our depth it’s even more important. Johnson all but confirmed this at media day.

I've mentioned all of those reasons previously. But, you don't go into the season with a redshirt getting all of the reps. If he's going to redshirt, his reps will taper backwards now.

This isn't the question. Morgan will be starting. Replace Morgan with Milazzo on that list and then ask which 2 you want starting.

Crews, Berry, Morgan, Doughty, Dugas, Thompson, and McManus will be starting...

If it's freshman/sophomore (or better) Beloso, him and Morgan.

If it's last year's Beloso; Morgan and...well, take your pick really. Without knowing what Pearson, Merrifield, Stevenson or Jobert really bring to the table yet tough ask against Bianco, Drost and Gio.

If I had to guess, they go with Morgan and Beloso if Morgan and can play outfield and Beloso is bringing back the hitting he used to have. That gives you another strong vet in the lineup with Beloso who has been around here a while.

He received about 10 innings out of a possible 42 over the weekend.

And those reps should taper back if he's going to redshirt. If Jay is letting him play for a spot, by all means, keep letting him have the reps.

The point is, no matter how you slice it, Morgan at 1B doesn't ensure the best overall (offensive and defensive) lineup just because he's the best 1B. I think we're way over-valuing 1B, and way under-valuing scoring runs. It will all play out and Tre may play 1B every game, but it won't be because he's so good at 1B that they can't afford to move him.

Thoughts on a batting order? Best guess at opening night

1. Morgan 1b
2. Crews RF
3. Berry 3b
4. Doughty 2b
5. Dugas LF
6. Thompson SS
7. Gio CF
8. McManus C
9. Bianco DH

I like this lineup but I think Drost or Stevenson get's in over Gio. And due to Bianco being injured most of the fall you get maybe Merrifield, Pearson, or Jobert at DH. That's just my opinion at this point.
