This thread could be argued for weeks, but the stats show the offense had more trouble converting 3rd downs and sustaining drives thoughout the game. The defense while not the dominant force we were accustomed to prior to 07 was by far the better of the two units.

I don't think the defense was bad. But I never have and never will like bend but don't break and that's what it appears to me Chavis is about.

I prefer being the aggressor, for better or for worse. I think Chavis likes to try to take the high ground.

I never pined for Chavis while he was at Tennesse, and never feared him. I think he's solid and an above average linebacker coache, but as a DC...eh....he's o.k. IMHO.

I agree Ugly to an extent, he is not the best schematicly. If he has some dominant linemen he will rely on them for pressure he just doen not like to blitz on multiple down as most here would like him to do. I also like an attacking defense more but you have to have the right talent to do it effectively I don't think we have had it the last two years.

All of which are reflected in Time of Possession. Our TOP was consistently less than our opponents, contributing to a variety of problems on offense and defense.

I'm not talking about points

You are talking D and how ours was a bad one last season. Points allowed is the #1 measuring tool for a D. There is NO more important stat for a D much like there is no more important stat/objective for a pitcher than ERA.

Would it have been better for our O if the D had more 3 and outs last season...of course. Just like it would have been better for our D if the O had fewer 3 and outs.

If you think the Chavis D which allowed 19 pts per game last season in our SEC schedule was bad, how would you describe the Bo D in 07 which allowed 27 pts per game in our SEC schedule?

Our D was good last season. Not elite or great, but good enough to be a positive factor in a 9-3 regular season.

That average is misleading because of the overtime games and points allowed by offensive turnovers or special teams.

Here is how the 2007 defense really did with regard to allowing points vs. SEC teams:

Mississippi State: 0 points allowed.
South Carolina: 16 points allowed.
Florida: 24 points allowed.
Kentucky: 27 points allowed (16 were scored in OT).
Auburn: 17 points allowed (Auburn scored 7 on a 3-yard drive after recovering a fumble, not attributable to the defense)
Alabama: 24 points allowed (Alabama scored 7 on a punt return and 3 on a 0-yard drive after a turnover at our 4-yard line, not attributable to the defense)
Ole Miss: 17 points allowed (Ole Miss scored 7 on a punt return, not attributable to the defense)
Arkansas: 28 points allowed (22 were scored in OT)

True average points allowed: 19.1

Throw in the SEC championship game: 14 points allowed.

Average counting SECCG: 18.6

Ummm....points allowed are POINTS ALLOWED. Overtimes count. If I'm not mistaken thats how we lost those two games.

LSU's defense gave up fewer yards per play than all but 14 teams.

Overtime is rigged to help the offense score points so that the game will be decided and there won't be endless overtimes with no scoring. Some would say it's even too easy for the offenses, resulting in endless overtimes with everybody scoring, as we've seen a number of times. Under those circumstances, it's silly to use overtime points allowed as an indication of how good the defense is.

To compare defenses of different years (or different teams in the same year), it's stupid to count overtime points scored in overtime games when one played six overtimes and the other played zero. Add six opponents possessions starting at our 25-yard line to the 2009 defense's stats and you'll get a higher average than what they had. And remember to add those six possessions at the end of the game, a time when the 2009 defense had a very hard time stopping teams in close games. The points you allow in the 60 regulation minutes of the game is what indicates how good your defense is at not allowing points.

As to all your "true average" stuff, it has some merit.

Having said that, the LSU scoring D of 09 was 11th nationally and in 07 it was 17th.

Of course, the total D in 07 was #3.

There is no doubt D needs to be better at getting off the field. We had a bend but don't break defense, we were good at holding opposition to field goals inside the 20. Definitely need to get more three and outs, watching our D was frustrating at times. Need to get back to a real physical D line.
