Dietzel/Saban

Has anyone else ever looked at the similarities? Dietzel replaces an intially popular but ultimately ineffective coach (Tinsley), revitalizes the program and wins a national title, leaves for a "better" job(Army) and eventually returns to the SEC as a coach (South Carolina). Saban replaces an initially popular but ultimately ineffective coach (Dinardo), revitalizes the program and wins a national title, leaves for a "better" job(Miami Dolphins) and eventually returns to the SEC as a coach (Alabama).
Sorry if this is just rehashing an old topic, but I've been brushing up on my LSU FB history and it inspired me to create an account here!

Not even close. Dietzel never rose to the same success elsewhere that he did at LSU. Read his autobiography, and it seemed sad that in each job after he left LSU, it seemed to be a step on the down side.
Also, don't get the impression that Dietzel was nearly as driven as Saban is.

Dietzel was driven, but football was his hobby.
Paul had other things he like to due much more then coach football.

I meant more about the circumstances of their LSU careers than their personal lives. Although I seriously doubt Saban will ever come back to the school in any kind of capacity like Dietzel did.

Dietzel could have been the best coach in our history if he had stayed around

When Dietzel left Army for South Carolina, they were in the ACC, 20 years before first being independent and then joining the SEC.

D'oh! You're totally right. I was reading about the LSU/SC game in the 60s that was Dietzel's return to Tiger Stadium, I completely overlooked they weren't members of the SEC. Guess I have alot more brushing up to do!

Nice #%^^!* post NEWB............
Biggio, Don't worry about guys like this who think that they are better than you because they never make mistakes and they have posted more than you on this website. I have been on here for 2 years and probably only post twice a week. So what. I own my own business, I contribute to the TAF, and I go to the football games. I graduated from LSU. But some would have you and me believe that we know les (get it) about LSU sports than they do, because they sit in front of a computer screen all day long and spew their opinions.
One difference in Dietzel (who I have met and is a fine gentleman) and Saban (who I have met and was abrupt): Dietzel served our country flying bomber planes in WWII. Saban served himself too much beer and fell off a dock.

Saban will be appreciated much more once he is several years removed from the Bama job. There will come a day where he is honored at LSU on the field much like Spurrier at Florida. As of now he is all crimson and I hate him. Will never pull for him again.

There are lots of stories that are not in any book. PD made a lot of mistakes. He was the youngest coach in football and one fine looking man. This got him into hot water....a lot. Remember, he had Cholly Mac as a DC. We were a D team. PD was a psyc major and used charm, not at all like Saban who uses gall. PD had a TV show that was one of the most popular programs in the state. Every female that could crowd into a dorm with a TV was watching. They ooohed and aaaahed over Paul. Nothing since could compare.

DD don't post that, then we will have to tell them that is why he left LSU, which many of us know and can name the names.
Jim Corbett kept the main story out of the news that year, which I have direct from someone in the press box that night long ago.
Jim had the BR media wrapped around his every word.

Well, Jim got his story, too. NANANANA I know who made up the story for Jim about the heart attack when he got shot.

Jim is still my hero, had we had him in 1977 Alexander would have had a chance for the Heisman.
Jim had nation wide connections, even got Abe in the college football hall of fame, even though Abe played 2nd team at LSU his last two years.
As I told Hillery at the hall, abe was the best qb in the nation in 1933, but could not start his last 2 years due to injuries.
BC is the one I still neeed to speak with, as I will be doing a small work on Istrouma. I need to find out of he played on Grandmothers field when he was at Istrouma. Little and Big Fuzz to great coaches they still have not got the national press they should have had.
