I'm not sure how they did the contracts back then, if A&M got a guarantee from LSU or, perhaps, a share of the gate. That's how the SWC used to operate--visitors got half the gate. As a result, Bear Bryant signed a contract for A&M to play 10 consecutive years at Rice, where there was a decent chance of 70,000 being in attendance (and the majority A&M fans), as opposed to a crowd of 30,000 or less at Kyle Field (which had about 32,000 permanent seats back then).

They must have been well taken care of to make 16 consecutive annual trips to Baton Rouge.
