Everyone be honest, did we have any inkling that Saban would be "Saban" at the time he left? He has success, won a title, but Les was doing well also and we were probably all happy we got another good coach. In hindsight, we should have kicked Les to the curb and brought Saban back, but in the moment, I honestly don't think it was even close to that clear cut of a decision.

Pretty sure Miles had just won a national title. It wasn’t in the cards.

Saban's first year back was '07, so Les was ABOUT to win a title....with 2 losses and a lot of luck.

Saban went 7-6 that year and never looked back.

I always wondered if Pitt didn't upset West Virginia in 07 and Herbie didn't go on TV saying that Les was going to Michigan, maybe Nick would have coached one year at Bama. Then Les would go to his alma mater and Nick comes back here.

Skip was a baseball god, but he screwed up that deal….
I know people will say “no! He made the right choice - protected his current coach (CLM) - who was about to win a national championship!”

And I say — with Nick’s recruited talent
And I say — CLM then went 8-5 (3-5 SEC) in 2008 and never got another trophy hoist

Had Saban come back in 2008, what could’ve been!!!!!!

FTR, after the GOTC Les held a 3-2 head-to-head advantage over Nick but would never win again.

It wasn't that Nick was at Bama, it's what Les became here. The fallout resulting from Perrilloux is what did Les in, not Nick.

The absolute truth of the matter & a perspective few outside of tiger nation will ever appreciate.

In a biography about Saban, and a damn good one, Saban contacted LSU minutes after his introductory press conference with the Miami Dolphins and wanted to return to LSU. Too late. Les Miles was incoming. Nothing LSU administration could do at that point. Saban regretted taking the Miami job the moment he agreed to take it.

Not sure if he was ultimately responsible for making the decision to not hire Saban back, but Bertman absolutely could not stand the guy. That is fact.

So crazy how that one player so drastically changed the trajectory of LSU football and Les Miles coaching career.

From what I understand and remember of that time, I believe this was much closer to happening than people think. I seem to recall that it was AFTER Saban's first year at Bama that he came closest to coming back to LSU. There were strong rumors that Miles was possibly (probably) going to leave for the Michigan job, and I recall that Saban was our top target if Miles left, and the feeling was mutual. Remember, Saban had a rough first season at Alabama....this was the season they lost to ULM, and they finished 7-6. Alabama fans were not exactly sold on him at that point.

And then somehow Miles decides NOT to go to Michigan, tells everyone to "have a GREAT day", we win the SEC Championship, and somehow as a 2 LOSS team we backpedaled into the BCS Champ Game. There was some dude on here at that time who had figured out how to calculate the BCS rankings before they were announced, so everyone on the board knew late that night that we would be playing in the ship....ALL IN ONE DAY. I literally woke up on that Saturday morning knowing that we lost out on the Nat Champ and we were losing our coach (who had two strong seasons), and the SEC Champ was basically meaningless. By the time I went to bed that night we were keeping our coach and were going to the natty. Absolutely the craziest day ever.

Those were good times. Long live the Mad Hatter.

Skip didn’t make a good or bad decision. There was no decision to make.

The real rumor I heard was that when Miles was supposed to go to Michigan after 2007, Saban was locked and loaded to jump back to LSU after his 6-6 first season at Bama.

Herbie jumped the gun, pissed miles off, miles stayed and Saban made his run.

A lot of people forget that Les had a pretty epic run of about 8-9 years. They just remember the last years.

Les presided over the Golden Era of LSU football. No, he didn’t build it from the foundation up, but 05-11 were some pretty epic fricking teams. He’ll, the 2012 team was soooooo good.
