Sorry, kline, I didn't mean to insult your granpa. But truly, Hawthorne is terrible for two reasons. One, you often can't tell what's going on. Example: he'll say it's first and ten, call the next play as a five yard run, then come back with second and seven. Now, that might not seem like much, but when you're listening on the radio it's frustrating. Two, he's getting more and more bitter as the years go by. I don't want to hear whining from the radio announcer. I get enough of that from pussies like you, kline.

I have to know, did you prefer the first Darren or the second Darren on "Bewitched"?

We finally have an elite program with elite facilities. We should not settle for a below average PBP guy. If you or me performed at our jobs the way he does at his, we would have been fired long ago.

We have to settle for some unsufferable conts as fans, so where's the difference?
I can put up with JH a lot longer than I can you cynical, contemptuous, schoolgirl bitches.
Turn the frickin radio off if you don't like it, or tune into to Gold, Kellum, or Bramblet.

Hawthorne is one of the worst play by play announcers in all of college football. He routinely blows calls, misnames players, fails to give down and distance, etc, ad nauseum. One of these days, Louisiana will realize that you don't have to sound like a country bumpkin to call football games well.

He makes mistakes aplenty, but he is entertaining and is not an unabashed homer.

Such as the 'Bama partisans or the utter and complete homers who call TAMU. They are awesome.

JH calls players by the wrong name or says something happened when it didn't but he is entertaining.

Sounds like some you think it is so easy. There is a game Friday against Arkansas that will be on TV. Why don't you record yourself doing the play-by-play for the whole game, or even just a quarter or two? Then you can show everyone how wonderful you are at doing what you say anyone can do.

No one has said that "anyone can do a better job". I'm not nominating myself, although have done some local cable high school basketball. I don't envision myself with JH's job.

But I listen to other teams PBP guys and know that our guy doens't match up with many of the others.

Dont' get insulted. I would just like to be able to listen to the game and actually know what is happening

Realize how good you have it and quit bitching.

How do we have it so good if we are watching a complete pass and JH calls it an interception? Or when the spot on the RB is out of bounds in front of the marker and JH talks about being short of the first down. THen when they signal FD, he goes on about what a great spot they got on the play. You can sometimes tell Doug is at a loss for how to handle these mistakes.

We shouldn't be satisfied with 2nd class coaching, or event management, or turf management, or PBP or anything else. Give him a gold watch and let him continue to split time with Hannagriff on baseball and let him do basketball for a few more years. But football is too visible and important to let him continue to screw it up. No hard feelings. Just time to go in a new direction.

What a jackass. He's been at it over 30 years and while you may dislike him, he is well respected in the industry. For instance, Finebaum will have him on as a guest every year and introduce him as the legendary voice of the Tigers. Most fan bases bitch about their play by play...like most things concerning LSU, our fans have a grandiose desire for perfection. Bama fans ridicule Eli Gold the same way. Hawthorne will retire when he decides he wants to.

THIS!

Too many people on this board, especially the younger ones, don't remember what JH was like at his best. Age has definitely affected him, but he's been the PBP announcer for all 3 major sports for 30 years. There aren't too many people in the history of college sports to have ever done something like that.

He should be allowed to retire on his own terms just out of body of work alone.
