Often lost in the shuffle of the transfer portal is the due diligence that teams and coaches due in vetting their newest additions. This was the process that cornerback Denver Harris had to go through before officially joining the LSU roster. Harris met with the coaching staff multiple times before both sides agreed that the structure and organization would be a good fit for him going forward.

“We did a lot of research. This was not a decision where said this is just a great player,” Brian Kelly told the media on Tuesday. “We did our due diligence and met with him several times. He had a lot of people speak on his behalf and a number of interviews with Coach House and myself. We felt with the culture that we had put together here that he would make it.”

Harris struggled to stay on the field at Texas A&M last season, missing seven games due to suspension. However in the five games that he did play, Harris demonstrated why he was rated so highly. He displayed the ability and potential to be an SEC corner, in which Kelly noted that LSU could be his last chance to live out that reality.

quote:

“He’s done well early on and he has no choice. He has to make it.,” Kelly said. “Here’s a guy that has been given a second chance. We feel like that with the circumstances of culture being strong here and him knowing that this is really his last chance at an SEC opportunity that is worth the risk. So far it’s been good.”

quote:

Harris’s talent has never been in question. 247Sports national scouting analyst Gabe Brooks touted the Houston, Texas native as “one of the nation's top cornerbacks in his class. Should be a high-floor prospect with developmental upside given frame and instincts. Projects as a potential impact player in a power conference with long-term NFL Draft early-round potential.”

Denver never wanted to go to A&M. Really hope that this works out for him and LSU. So far he has bought in

Jimbo has ruined many people at both Florida state and A&M. Thug culture with no real leader.

Under the previous coaching staff I would not have much confidence.

But I am excited to see Harris fulfill his football potential and become an honorable, respectful representative of our lsu tigers. What happened to him at A&M has happened to many others. We will see him flourish.

This sounds like - Harris was almost warned. Sort of like a "come to Jesus" conversation.

This is his 2nd major shot at a big time school. If he F's up here, and gets cut from the team, he ends up at Directional Mississippi JUCO....

And this story goes one of 2 ways -

#1 He comes here and keeps his nose clean. Points himself in the right direction and with the right people, and a couple of years from now he leaves early for the NFL draft. Might become a star at LSU along the way.

#2 He is who he is and can't make the right choices. Can't run with the right crowd .... and before we get through the end of this season - he's out.

I hope this kid figures it out. I know most of us weren't good decision-makers at 18... let's hope he understands and points himself in the right direction going forward.

He certainly has all of the tools.

In his commitment video to LSU his first thought of what to do with the CFP Trophy was to use it as a gun. But it was a Jimbo problem not a Harris problem.

Meh, kid never wanted to go to aTm but the money was too big. He acted out and now he’s where he’s comfortable and is ready to play. It’s not that complicated

I wouldn't read too much into that photo. Here's 2024 LSU QB Colin Hurley doing the same thing. And if you know anything about Colin then

That's what you got out of that video? ?? sure bud, if u say so. I just watched it, he's definitely not holding it like a gun. Go find someone else to talk about other than a kid trying to get a 2nd shot

And hundreds of other kids have been under Jimbo with zero issues. Personal responsibility is what BK is teaching him. Don’t blame Jimbo for Harris making his own mistakes.

Colin's pose looks more like he's holding a gun or a bazooka, but Denver's pose looks like he's cradling the trophy while admiring it. Kind of like a proud papa holding his baby.

And yes, Colin is the last guy I would worry about. Neither of their pictures mean anything.

This is a win win for the school and the athlete. I think our staff will help this young man realize his potential and in turn make our defense VERY hard to complete passes. That is not just stating the obvious. I think this will be the most significant improvement in the back end of our defense.

His biggest hurdle may be how he handles success and adulation.
