Why was it necessary to change the defensive scheme. Sure we had some problems at the beginning of last year but I thought the defense evolved into a very good unit by the time we played the National Championship. Seems like most of our problems early last year were of poor tackling not blown coverage.

Couldn't rush the passer. This was supposed to be better than that.

That's a HUGE problem this year. LSU couldn't tackle jack in the MSU and Missouri games.

This of course is the reason. Aranda left, and whoever replaced him would put his own scheme in. It didn't matter who it would be, whether we brought in someone from outside, or elevated from within.

LSU during it's current elevated status has run a few different schemes; Saban's D, Pelini's, the Malveto experiment, Chavis, Aranda, Steele, and back to Pelini. Most have been good, all have been criticized at times.

"Malveto" in 2008 is the reason we hired outside; this was the last time they tried to hang onto an existing scheme after the DC left, and it was a disaster.

O prefers more aggressive, pass rushing, penetrating 4-3 defense.

How’s that working out for him?

This philosophy is really shallow. Predictability on defense is a killer. If the offense knows you’re going to pressure, they’ll simply run the quick counters to that, and you have to adjust to it. So far LSU hasn’t even been able to make the adjustments.

Brent Venables is arguably the best DC in the country (I think he is) and he is suoer aggressive and pressures a ton.

BUT he is unpredictable with it.

I don't think the scheme is fully implemented yet. It was a major change from what we ran, there probably would have been some learning curve even if we had a normal spring and summer to prepare.

We didn't have that, and on top of the Covid crap there were distractions from the social stuff (the Ryan Clark stuff and the marching). Guys just didn't seem to be ready.
I suspect Kary Vincent figured heavily into the plans in the secondary, we lost him fairly late with the opt-out. Add to that losing Stingley the first week, and I really don't think the secondary is quite up to speed just yet. We also seem to be weak (or raw) at LB.

I think in theory the scheme should work, once it's in place. Should be similar to the Chavis 2010/2011 D; we just ain't ready yet. Stingley and Ricks should be nightmares next season.

I think the hard choice THIS season is:
a) dumb it down some so the players aren't as lost, and try to win a few more this year,
or
b) stick with it, take your lumps in a crazy year, and be locked and loaded next season.
