I have also received several emails asking if I believe Zach Mettenberger will win the starting quarterback job in Spring practice and my answer is no. I think it will take a while for Mettenberger to get his timing down with the receivers and to learn the play book and I believe that Les Miles' loyalty to his upperclassmen will keep Jordan Jefferson as the starter to open the season. However, I do believe Mettenberger has a good chance of starting by the time SEC play starts.

I disagree. JJ was one of the worst (at least statistically) QB's in division 1 football. Met was one of the best in division 2. They both have to learn the same playbook. Timing will come in 7 on 7 drills and spring practice. If Met is as good as he should be, I can't see JJ starting in front of him, unles Les pulls the favorite card and just uses Met to bail us out of tight situations a la Lee last year.

New OC means new play book. I dont think this factors in imo....

Im not going to be pissed if JJ starts... but Mett obviously needs to be given an opportunity and at least a % of the reps each game..

Mett absolutely HAS to be put in some game time situations this coming year, or the next year we'll end up like Florida this past year. One of the problems with so many close wins this past year is that fewer people got into real steady rotation, especially very young players that needed the experience (defense being the exception) of game time pressure.
That being said, I wouldn't be suprised to see Lee out there some too. Injuries are gonna happen...they do every year....it's become obvious we need to keep 2 talented quarterbacks at all times. It's the price you pay for being in the SEC running every year.

Do you disagree with him or don't understand that portion of his post?

Or are you saying his point is irrelevant?

Agreed. I only ask that the QB position is open and everyone has a equal and fair chance to win the job. Whomever wins it and shows they are the better QB, let them start. If JJ clearly outperforms Mett, let him start. I just hope the they get a fair shot

And that's a mighty big "if" seeing as how Juco and the SEC are bout as different as night is to day.

O stats or not, our team play is coming off a 11 win and Top 8 season and not a 8 win, 3 win SEC, and non-ranked season.

If Mett picks everything up like a duck to water...great for LSU.

To have expectations that he will, might be a tad over the top. imo

I dont even know where to begin.

JUCO is NOT D2 first of all. And secondly, using the argument that being the best in JUCO automatically makes a player better than a D1 player based off statistics is false.

I mean, both his point AND the "facts" he's trying to use are flawed.

Mett is probably better and will prob win the starting job but it's not going to be because of that logic

Was this before or after we hired a new OC?

If after, then old Don needs some stronger coffee.

JUCO football is excellent talent wise and is better than D2 and D3 in a lot of cases. Most players are in juco bc of academic or character issues. Talent is not a problem, though.

How would you feel if JJ starts the first game against Oregon because Miles is loyal to him, and LSU loses? We really don't have that much room for error in "tinkering" with our starters next year. LSU needs to hit the ground running.

miles will play the QB that gives us the best chance of winning. fini'. JJ looked damn good in the Cotton Bowl and he will have 4 yrs of experience and he can run. if the cotton bowl was an aberration, i think mettenberger has a great chance of starting, if JJ has indeed matured in the job, mett will have a year to learn our system. kragthorpe will not change our offense much from what we were doing in the cotton bowl.

Mett compares comparably with Big Ben. He already has one trait locked down,,,,if he only can play like Big ben that would be awesome for LSU.

I disagree with Don, I think Mett will compete and have the starting position before WVU. They can figure out timing in spring, cant really be any worst than JJ's timing with the WR's and if zack is a competitor like we all think he is he will have no problem with timing. JJ had 9 games with 0 TDs and 10 INT..that's ridiculous....Zack mett threw more TDs last year than almost JJs whole career...granted it was juco but now he has a better line and faster WR's.

Right now I do not think the WR's have any confidence in their QB and that is throwing them off..

I really wish people would stop saying this. It's worse than saying every black qb compares well to Vince Young.
