John Tudor used to tell this story after he graduated : " we'd spend a whole 2 hour practice on the last shot / play of the game, over & over & over again, 2 plays. Next home game, down to last possession to win, in the huddle Brown tossed his clip board to the floor, told us to circle & hold hands, a Kumbaya moment, clapping, yelling. We took the floor, players all looked lost. We never got the ball in bounds. "....Drawing a blank on the year, but LSU was playing UGA at home. LSU had a one point lead, one second left, possession of the ball under the basket. LSU in bounded the ball out of bounds at half court untouched. UGA got the ball back, a jump pass to a player at the free throw line, touch release, game winning basket. Only Brown could lose a game like that. Remember the assistant coach who lost a suitcase full of cash, on a recruiting trip for Chris Jackson, and promptly claimed he had not deposited several pay checks after cashing them? Mid to late in his career, described as crazy as a loon off the court is not a stretch.

The answer is gonna depend on what generation you are from. I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s and other than a few Superstars like Pettit and the Pistol…the program was a failure. Dale turned LSU into a good/very good basketball program. He made LSU fans care about basketball. From the late 70’s to early 90’s, LSU was Kentucky’s nemesis in the SEC. I want to say the head-to-head record was even over that span. He brought in great talent nationally..from John Williams (Los Angeles) to Jerry “ice” Reynolds (Brooklyn) to Maurice Williamson (Connecticut)..not to mention Shaq and CJ. He had us playing all the top powers during that time period on National TV. We really played everybody. We played Houston with Hakeem and Phi slamma Jamma at their peek. We played North Carolina with MJ. We played Duke with Laetner. We played UNLV with Larry Johnson. We played Arizona at their peek. Some of those were spectacles in the Superdome.

While I think he’s tarnished his legacy…he’s probably a little underrated. I’ve lost a lot of respect for the guy over the years though.

When he couldn't win it all with Shaq, Roberts, Singleton, Jackson, etc. I knew he never would.

He had plenty of talent to win a championship.

Dale Brown was an awesome communicator and practice coach.

His practices were a thing of beauty.

Basketball was fun under Dale.

He sincerely loved people, especially the common folk.

"Couldn't win it all"? Those teams never even won the SEC & UK was down, on probation. Will Perdue's team...Vandy???....won the SEC. Will Perdue vs Shaq.

First of all, frick Bobby Knight

Second, I’m sure you think he coached his way into Fess Irvin missing free throws, and crooked refs who didn’t T his arse up for his antics in 1987.
