'm pretty sure he got a medical redshirt. I think LSU needs to apply for it and it then may be granted by the NCAA.
You can't apply for a medical redshirt until after your 5th year, I think. I could be wrong about that.
Loston is a SO.

you can get a medical redshirt. Its different from extending eligibility for a sixth year. A med redshirt is to assure that if somebody plays early in the year then gets hurt and can't play then they don't lose a year and can get their rs

He may never apply for a medical hardship waiver if he leaves for the NFL early. But if and when he needs one he will be granted one.

you are.
without looking it up to verify the details...
1. You have 5 years to play 4
2. If you play any at all during a season, that counts as one of the 4
3. If an injury knocks you out for the season, and you've played in no more than 20% of your team's games, all of which are in the 1st half of the season, you can apply for a medical hardship waiver (i.e. medical redshirt), immediately after that season
4. If you miss multiple seasons due to injury, you can apply for a 6th year of eligibility, after your 5 years are up. Seasons have to be lost due to injury, a voluntary redshirt (i.e. freshman year didn't play at all) does not count for one of the seasons. (thus if Murphy plays next year, he's done.)

No. Its after the season in question. See Fore's post above

Fore nails it in case of any lingering doubt.

This is correct.
