College athletes ARE PAID. Not having to pay for something (college education) is getting paid. One of my best friends had a football scholarship at Vandy. We added it up one night and his scholarship saved his family 200,000$. This notion that they dont get paid is ridiculous. They get cloths, food, housing, and the best medical care on the planet.

But something is clearly wrong when u see Alabama building on to facilities and paying their coaches big money, but now theres not enough money l No shot taken at the Gumps. It is what it is. How many programs can stay afloat if they now have to pay players? UAB cant stay afloat without paying, and its UAB not a small school in North Dakota.

No offense, but it's not like UAB realistically recruits the same Caliburish player outside of the occasional anomaly like Roddy White.

I would propose a hard cap- every team can spend the same amount- the total cap depending on prob/stats models that don't price lower tier teams out. The big boys will still come to our schools, all things being equal. Gotta start somewhere

None taken. Whether UAB is dead last in football is not really the point Im trying to make. The point is how do u do it? I heard one guy say the other day well they deserve a "little" money......by using a term like "a little something" u are already saying they are under paid before it even gets started.!

When will it stop, Football may be the hottest business on the planet, it will not be long before a little pay has to be increased a "little"... and again and again.
When money gets involved a litany of issues will become commonplace.

And before long it will be the golden rule. U know the one where the schools with the most gold make the rules. Not sure why they will need the NCAA if it gets to this point.

U can see it already at UAB. They are a part of the Alabama system but are unable to afford football, but another school in the same system adds on to facilities and has one of the highest payrolls. Golden rule in play right here.

If any kind of salary cap happens it should be on facilities and payrolls. Good luck on that one.
The arms race has begun, it just took others outside the SEC to finally realize.

They are being paid. $40K education with no out of pocket expenses.

They do get paid.

The chance at an education, meals, shelter and everything else obtained from the experience.

Now being paid for their image is another thing.

UAB is a branch of the flagship University in Tuscaloosa. It was pretty much put in B'ham so there could be a serviceable hospital in a better location. Bama football more than pays for itself several times over, UAB doesn't even approach questionably being feasible. UAB was given 19 years to get self-sufficient, gather fans, raise money, etc and they simply couldn't do it.

Now I believe they should have a team and believe and hope they do but I would be in 1-AA. Maybe the Ohio Valley Conference with JSU, Tenn Tech, Tenn-Martin, Austin Peay, Belmont etc.. These are all less than 4 or 5 hours driving time. Less travel, less players, less expense and the crowd numbers would be more along the lines of those schools. 15-25K a game is not D-1. It would also create some natural rivalries which brings fans and honestly the closest thing UAB ever had to that was USM. They NEED a rival. Close in proximity as those make the best rivalries to begin with. JSU would instantly be one. Also, they could keep their D-1 status in basketball in baseball.

Will players be paid? No, not with legit checks but don't believe for a sec they aren't getting under the table. If you are competing in big time football, someone is supporting some players on the team. This is every team in every major conference. Other sports in some cases as well. The problem is the guys who dont get any hundred dollar handshakes. That's who is making the noise. Most players on a team get nothing. Only a few are "worthy" of under the table cash.

And less than 20 schools who make money in athletics. And only 10 schools who don't take a stipend to help prop up the athletic department.

Once you start to truly pay players, then you might as well break all those schools apart from the rest of CFB, as few can play that game.

as a season ticket holder, i am very strongly opposed to this. play for the love and the opportunity to be seen on tv 10+ times a year, and for the opportunity to get an education and room and board for 4-5 years, or go do something else. no one forces any kid to play college ball. they either do so or do something else. period. exclamation point.

I'm pretty sure they're already legally paid a small monthly stipend.

Maybe you should look this up and ask should they be paid more.

I think that subsidy actually comes from the government...not the school. In LSU's case, the athletic department is able to give back to the school because it operates with a profit.

This!!!!! Somebody please do the research and see just how much that is. I think the amount will be astonishing. Yes they ARE being paid. And quite handsomely to be sure.

LSU, Nebraska, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, & Texas are the only athletic departments that didn't take a subsidy.

UNLV's subsidy is over $32 million.

It will be the taxpayers paying student athletes

They are there for an education and secondarily to play sports. If this changes, then they just need to have an NFL 4 year camp with no requirements on grades and college. That is the real issue here.

I suppose you'll need to start paying every student that is going to school (except they actually get a part time job-well some do).
They get many perks such as free meals, etc. Plus, what somone else said, they get a nice little kick behind the scenes to float them through. Goes on everywhere I'm sure.
