This.
The extension is irrelevant if the buyout is manageable. They could give him a 1,000 year extension and it wouldn't matter if his buyout is $0

Don't you understand the difference between no extension and firing him? He still has two years left on his current contract. The next two years will definitely tell which way this program is going. If he wins out and we win our bowl game, then perhaps you can give him a two year extension with a small pay raise but also with a very low buyout. If he is doing great two years from now then by all means give him another two or three year extension and a pay raise but again do not get into one of these ridiculous buyouts like we got saddle with Les! No other top ten program in the country would take Coach O and those are just the facts.

agree! If we finish 11 & 2, I feel O has earned his paycheck and gets to come back for a 3rd season. But this talk of extension is utterly ridiculous.

Why did we hire O?
To win 9 or 10 games? Nope. We had that.
We hired him to overhaul the offense. Well. It’s worse.
We also hired him to get us back competing for titles. That’s not happening And it ain’t just the abortion of a loss to Bama- it the loss to Fla led by a joke of a QB- Franks.
We could backdoor the playoffs like Bama does if we beat the Gators.
So, is he advancing the program and doing what he said? Again....nope.

I don’t understand the extension talk this soon.
10 wins should be a rolling 1-year extension, at least to get him to 4 years out because of recruiting.
How is a guy on the cusp of a playoff run (and frankly, the right 10 wins is a playoff team, IMHO) supposed to recruit when his contract doesn't even run through the kid's eligibility? Now, 7 or 8 wins? I agree - that burns a year of the contract. But, if he wins 10 wins every other year, you extend him every other year. Probably with a raise. 11 wins should be a bigger raise.
If you can't understand that, I can't help you.

10 wins do not just "happen".
Do nine wins "just happen"?
Because the old guy won nine REGULAR SEASON GAMES nine out of eleven years. And he won ten regular season games six of eleven.
And he was fired.
The standard has been set, and not by us.
Also, these same people in this thread defending an absurd extension for a guy who has done nothing and who will never have an offer to leave are most of the same ones that bash the extension for the former conference and national championship coach that left us in the predicament that landed us with the current guy that no one else ever wanted.
Not saying that's you, Ace, but that's the side you're on here.
O has two years left on his deal. That isn't going to worry any recruits in this class. As if anyone is committing to him personally anyway.
We will know all we need to know about the direction of the program next year. Extend him then if all looks well.
Anything sooner and we're making the same mistake Aleva made with Miles and Auburn made with Gus.

Coach 0 should NOT get an extension
Definitely agree.
1. Talent development - I fear he's still living off of the talent Miles brought in. Greedy. White. Fulton. Brumfield. Magee. Lawrence. All Miles recruits. I'm not saying he hasn't brought in some talent but there are some glaring holes.. Cough.. DL.. cough. Next year will give us a much better picture of how he is running the program.
2. Recruiting - He absolutely needs to finish out this recruiting cycle strong. Murmurs of losing yet another elite LA player to Bama and only one defensive lineman and one RB (so far) in the class are concerns. We're like #8 or so now? If we finish outside of the top 4 with the talent in Louisiana this year I'll consider that a failure.
3. Staffing - He needs to make changes on offense. He needs to suck it up and acknowledge E is not the man for the job. I think there needs to be some shakeup with Sullivan, Joseph and Robinson. Outside of those 4 I think the coaches are good. Busch, McMahon, and Cregg we're good hires.
4. Win - He needs to pull this team back up and finish out this season without another loss. That is extremely doable with our remaining schedule.
Bottom line. If he goes 11-2 he deserves a bonus for sure.
If he finishes out the recruiting cycle strong, addresses the offense/coaching situation, and does well next year with more of "his" players an extension is well deserved.

And when people wanted him gone after, say, 2012, I was calling that crazy talk "crazy" which is what it was.
But, after 14 and 15, he COULD NOT start 2-2 the way he did. So, while I understand the realities of his body of work at LSU, I was "okay" with his dismissal - but not to hire O. That was doubling down of insanity.
BUT, here we are. And O has to be judged on what he does at LSU. Have to give O a passing grade for the interim stint. He won 9 in 2017 - and frankly, that team was an 11-win caliber team - no reason to have lost against Troy (just a focus/chemistry thing, not talent or even scheme) and Notre Dame was a highly winnable game. Got pounded by MSU (which is unusual, but it happens) and Bama, but those should have been our only losses.
So, did he underperform or set the stage? This year isn't over yet - there could be a post-Bama collapse. But, if we win out, he should get an extension.
Why? Because if the admission here is that we're never going to support O, no matter what he does, then you're not really a fan of LSU.
