from what i've seen:

chavis with a good secondary = above average

chavis without a good secondary = scary

i just miss the old "pressure the q.b. thing".

Winning titles is a team effort.

Chavis may not be the premier defensive coach in college football but it's not fair to put UT not winning more titles on him.

Agree, but sure as hell doesn't warrant a raise/rollover.

He didn't get a raise for performance. He got one to keep him from going to Georgia. You may say let him go, but hiring another DC and learning a new scheme would not be best for this team right now.

Agreed, but many on here are acting like he was some sort of defensive master at Tennessee which he wasn't. He was a good DC, I don't ever recall Tennessee having a great defenses under him.

So if we have to clean house after next year we will be on the hook for even more money.....

So we should have let him go and hire some unknown to run our 3rd different scheme in three years?

Money is not an issue.

You must be awfully young to not remember UT defense in the mid to late 90s. When they had talent, they had a good defense.

He wasn't great. His best defenses were probably his 1996, 1998, and 1999 defenses.

There's no telling who we would have wound up if Chavis had left.

Well, we improved from last year.

Give him a medal.

This is as if you were asked to say something nice about a neighbor you dislike. "Well, he's never shot at me or my wife. And I know he owns guns."

Really? An improvement from last year? Because we were world beaters on defense in 2008. And the fact that for this feat, this turnaround of epic proportions (less sacks than the 2008 defense...think about that), the dumbasses that run LSU restructured the Chief's contract and paid him more cash. What a joke.

Why are yall obsessed with names? Hell, they have talented defensive assistants all around the country, and like I said before it's Miles duty to ferret these guys out and give them a shot. Who was Will Mushchamp before Saban gave him a shot? Who was Kirby Smart before he took the defensive gig at Alabama? Who was Bob Stoops before he won the national championship for Spurrier?

Am I in the Twilight Zone? Maybe he gave up less points than the year before, but the defense may have been narrowly better. What would this past years defense have been ranked had Jefferson threw the number and type of interceptions Jarrett Lee did the previous year?

We had shut down Mustain for the most part in the first half of the Arkansas game.........yet in the second we start rushing three down lineman and getting no pressure and he carves us up. It isn't rocket science folks.

So you want to take an unknown and turn him loose on his own in the SEC?

Learning a defense from a defensive HC is a tad bit different from learning defense from an offensive HC.

Talent was never an issue as UT has continued to produce Top 15 (even Top 10) recruiting classes for most of this decade.

People want to feel confident that if we lose a coach, there will be someone as good or better to replace him. It's natural. We might have ended up with the next Jerry Glanville, but we might have ended up with the next Doug Mallory.

And it could end up being a disaster.

They were quality coaches running a defense for a defensive-minded head coach. Miles can't take over the defense if the coach he hires is incompetent.

Pretty sure he was a co-dc or dc at K-State.

Not a clue, but they continued to have sustained Top recruiting classes. Could be many factors as it seems they have been hit or miss in past decade. Rank Top 20 one year and then 50 or lower the next, not sure if the players didn't buy into system or coaches learned to adapt to his system, or maybe offensive philosophy changed for other teams and his brand of defense is not suited for the spread that many teams incorporate.
