One question. Why does basically every DC or HC in ALL OF FOOTBALL do this? Cause it generally works.
It s frustrating to watch, but it generally works.
Every play but the last one we were in decent coverage. Chief was trying to put pressure in SJ, if anything we were too aggressive inour pass rush and got caught with our hand in the jar.

The knock of Chavis at TENN was always his prevent or read and react on 3rd down specially.
..FAST teams get too much of an advantage, even if it is "1/2" sec.
That's why TN hardly ever beat FL.

Well Saban Quoted at the end of the game, we knew what they were going to do, so HELLO
I hope Chief learns from that statement.

well, why didn't saban know what we were going to do the rest of the game and score every time. I agree that the soft/prevent defense by chavis caused us the game or we should have at least went to OT.
BUT, I can't help wondering how did a team get 435 yards of total offense, no turnovers and yet MANAGE to only score 17 points. with 435 yards of offense, you HAVE to score more than 17 points. someone screwed that up. WHO?

Love our D and how Chavis operates it, but as this article points out , we have had three games in a row were we have given up a late TD. Adjustments need to made as its not working especially if the players feels its like a slow death.

Chief has forgotten more about the game of football than you know. Stick to your day job

The OP's tone may be slightly harsh but his point is valid. Our D gave up two scoring drives and watch this (don't blink or you'll miss it):
63 yds in 57s (6 plays)
72 yds in 43s (5 plays, no TO's)
There were several isolated plays that I wished we could get a do-over on but more than any isolated play or other facet of the game THIS STANDS OUT!
Call it an achilles heel, blind spot, whatever but I gotta think we can do better in this area of the game.

Truth. This lost the game more than any other reason.

You people are impossible. Really.
If anything...we exposed Bama.
If Saban knew from good game planning to use only 2 minute drill offense to beat LSU, why in the F#(k did he not do this the entire game? Your logic is faulty.
Read more. One player missed his assignment on this play. He should have picked up the RB on the screen but sold out to the blitz.

Oh yea. He knew exactly which player was going to blitz..and even the personal package we used.
You give this guy too much credit.
Posted on 11/5/12 at 9:43 pm to Alltheway Tigers!
Saban didn't say they read the blitz. He said he knew we'd play a soft D when Bama got the ball and they knew how to exploit it...just like they did at the end of the first half.

1)Saban knew it was coming and had already scripted plays for it. the threw the ball to the same guy 5 times on the winning drive.
Noorwood and Yeldon. Not the same guy.

2)McCarron is too good a QB to be allowed to have time to sit back and survey the field.
At least 5 times (prob more) I can recall, McCarron was in the pocket LOOKING for an open receiver. All receivers were covered and had to improvise. That is where you get Bama..throw off QB to receiver timing. Most of McC TDs were designed pre-set plays.
The D-line finally got to him and forced him to throw it away. He is not THAT good of a QB, especially if forced to work through progressions. You make him work and think and it changes...and waste time.
All to point THREE..

3)Agressive defenses always suck at the prevent.
Best way to hit an aggressive defense is to use speed against them. How? Screens. That is where Saban knew screens would work. Bama called FIVE screens in the game.
Now, there were some other questionable decisions during the game but this play came down to a young defensive player missing an assignment, at least on this play, and some bad luck.

And I quote from step 1:
(screw it...quoting the whole damn thing cause once you read it...)
quote:
Instructions
1 Set the offense in a passing formation. The trick to the screen pass is that you want your lineman to be overmatched. This invites the defense to blitz the quarterback. After the pass is thrown, the wide receivers will act as blockers for the small secondary that the defense is left with. Be sure to set your offense with at least three wide receivers, if not four, as well as a tight end in passing formation and a running back who appears as if he will run a short route. This will make the defense's mouth water at the thought of pummeling the quarterback.
2 Hike the ball and have your quarterback drop back as if he is going to pass normally. Allow him one or two seconds to scan the wide receivers.
3 Block the defensive lineman that are rushing the quarterback. As your quarterback is dropping back, the offensive lineman must block the defense as they normally would in pass protection.
4 Move to the receiving position. As the quarterback and lineman are doing their thing, it's important that the running back (who usually catches the screen pass) flank to the side of the quarterback in anticipation for the throw.
5 Release the approaching defensive line. After one to two seconds, the offensive line will release the defensive line or essentially "give-up" blocking them. This is done on purpose so that they rush the quarterback and take their mind off the awaiting running back.
6 Throw the pass to the awaiting running back. Once the overzealous defense has bitten, it's time for the quarterback to throw the pass to the running back. In a perfect world, the quarterback will get rid of the ball before he is hit by the defense, but it should be noted more than one quarterback has taken a hit on a busted screen pass play.
7 Catch the ball and run like heck. Now that the running back has caught the ball, it's time to run up field. And all of the wide receivers are not supposed to block the thin secondary of the defense creating more opportunities for the running back to gain yardage. This was one of Tennessee fans main gripes against Chavis... the prevent. Don't get me wrong, Chavis and the D have saved our bacon most of the year. But I didn't understand why we gave them the sideline on the last drive.

Good article. He pretty much nails it. If it would've happened once, no big deal, but it's starting to become a trend. We just got lucky against USCe and A&M.

Lucky that those games didn't end like the Bama game did. That prevent or soft zone shite doesn't work when you are sitting on a slim lead.

Guess u didn't watch any other game this year did u? Off the top of my head both usce and a&m scored late td's.

You just said we were lucky.
Now it's were lucky that it didn't end the way the Bama game did.
Which is it?
Shaw was moving the ball with his throws, Reid intercepts him. Then Hill tears off a 50 yard run and gets a TD.
You are entitled to your opinion but you can't have your own facts. We ran out of time against Bama. We did something to Bama that hasn't been done since '07.
You're getting worse in your posts. Your glass was barely half empty to begin with. Every thing you post is in some way negative.
