he does need to mix it up, because it's obvious it's predictable and easy to scheme against...on the other hand, most coaches aren't going to risk getting beat deep that late in the game. You want the other team to have to run as many plays as possible to get down the field, burning clock in the process. Having Reid out probably hurt as well on a couple of missed assignments. Lack of pressure probably hurt on the last drive more than anything.

Go back and watch the film, dumbass. Our coach was rushing 3 . You don't get pressure against Bama rushing 3 from the prevent. Dumbass.

"LARGER CUSHION" is the key point - it's one thing to play a big cushion with a 7+ point lead with 1:45 left - quite another with a 3-point lead and a capable team to hit 10-15 yard receptions to good receivers from an accurate passer like AJ McCarron in soft coverage. A 1:45 clock in college football is like 3+ minutes in pro football with stopped clocks after every 1st down. At the very least, we were destined to give up a tying field goal to Bama and send the game into overtime - instead, Bama went for the throat and ran right past our defenders, who were clearly playing on their heels in that last minute.

Dont worry, he will be Petrino's defensive coordinator next year in Knoxville. Then there will finally be a program in SEC that can defeat Bama

I remember the Saints fans criticizing Gregg Williams. Guess how that turned out?

Prevent has to go. They suck at it, were out of psoition blew assignments and gave up 14 points in 3 minutes of football when they held them to 7 the restr of the game. What do you hve to know about football to get that this was a mistake? I can type you five pages of why it didn't work but here are the three main reasons.

1)Saban knew it was coming and had already scripted plays for it. the threw the ball to the same guy 5 times on the winning drive.

2)McCarron is too good a QB to be allowed to have time to sit back and survey the field.

3)Agressive defenses always suck at the prevent. (See NFL) it is not their nature to sit back and it takes away the aggression and attack mentality of the whole team. The great Saban lost at LSU versus Michigan State in the Capital One bowl(maybe) doing the same shite. If you are up by more than 10 in college and 17 in the pros you should never do it, in my opinion. Cheif tried to blitz to make up for it, Bama just held the DE's and it was over. They were in FG range in two plays.

poor call on a fake field goal 4th and12 and fake a 42 yard field goal
Failed executiion on an on side kick.
Long field goal attempt at end of game rather than punt and pin them inside their own 10 and make them go 90 yards rather than 60 yards with NO TIME OUTS.
Copeland penalty.
True.True.True.True. Each one. BUT - at the end of the day, with 90 seconds left, LSU still held a 17-14 lead when Bama began its final possession. Defense had played Bama lights-out the entire second half - they couldn't do anything. McCarron couldn't do anything. Bama's bench was in shock - you could see they had lost the game. Until... until Chavis and his soft/prevent defense played right into their hands and enabled (yes, ENABLED) Bama/McCarron to slice its way downfield like a hot knife through butter. So in the end, the crucial mistake, the fatal mistake was on Chavis. That soft defense is what lost the game for LSU in the end. We had weathered every one of the other Miles blunders. It was this one that killed us.

Hanagriff says he's the best coach on campus...any sport. And you think he's been "exposed". Man, this motherfricking board is off its rocker.

My sensible response is...you're assuming Chavis made the call for the soft defense. There have now been at least 2 (maybe one more...I can't remember) aggressive defensive coordinators who have inexplicably changed philosophies late in games, but they have worked for the same head coach...those being Pelini (Sp?) and Chavis. I'm not saying Miles actually called the defensive plays, but it could be possible that, as the "boss", he told Chavis to "keep it in front" which would equate to a prevent defense. Twice this year we've done that and twice our opponents have scored...South Carolina and now Alabama.

If we would have got beat on a deep pass, you would have freaked out on that too. The only mistake was that we didn't try and convert the 1st down to ice the game. We played for a meaningless FG that had it been made, we still would have lost by one point.

All I can say is I have never been a fan nor understood why a team would go to the prevent at the end of the game. All is does it prevent you from winning. Run your same damn defense you have been running all game long. You can't give a 10 to 12 yard cushion not to even speak of not protecting the sidelines.
