Loston has a A LOT to improve on. Reid was ahead of him in his first year in the program. If he doesn't improve this year, LSU might move him to LB. Especially if we land Collins in this upcoming class who will likely see the field instantly in at least a rotation.

LSU should pay Ron Cooper whatever is required to retain his services. He is my favorite assistant for his ability to find, sign and coach up very underrated prospects into all-conference caliber DBs, and it's not close.
I'm hoping he can develop Loston into the guy he has the talent to be.

On who will be the conference's next first round NFL DB?
There are many to choose from. Alabama's Barron and Kirkpatrick, LSU's Mathieu, South Carolina's Gilmore and Tennessee's Jackson are all worthy candidates. But the next first round DB out of the SEC will be LSU's Claiborne.
I remember when people cried when we signed claiborne.
Ron cooper is the fricking man.

I've been watching film from 07-10 all day.... I can't believe how much PT Eugene was getting a few years ago. That guy was an experienced veteran, and the true freshmen just blazed past him last year and he got to sit the bench after the first few games.
These youngsters are amazing.
IF we get LC too..... oh my. And Jenkins, Collins, Turner, White, ect. haven't even shown us what they have either.
We definitely are DB U
If we don't do something with Cooper, we may lose him to a big name DC job. He's good enough to warrant elite job offers IMO.

Not so fast there, my friend!

bullshite. Simon broke up some great throws from more than just JJ.

I hate these trite blanket statements. Because JJ was bad last year, he didn't throw any good balls in the Spring game. I was at the game, and most of those tharold Simon pass break ups were just ridiculous plays. I thought some of our young DB's made some plays that skewed JJs numbers a bit.

Those passes weren't that bad from what I remember. In fact, I thought they'd be deep catches until by some miracle long arms reach around the WRs and batted them down...
And Cooper isn't just a great coach, he is probably the best evaluator of talent on this staff. SC is still loaded at DB by his evaluations.

They did. These guys are just dumbasses. Simon made at least two plays a normal DB probably wouldn't have made unless he had that reach.

Simon broke up a nice pass by JJ and a potential TD pass by Mettenberger.
You guys should go back and watch the spring game again on ESPN3.

I think they are all studs but I would'nt put to much into secondary play in spring games. They have the QB's timing down and more than likely have seen the particular play the offense is running.

Reid was a more complete player coming out of HS because he had a former LSU Player & a guy that is an outstanding up-and-coming high school coach in Carrier helping teach him how the play the game and proper technique.
He came needing only to get up to speed with scheme. Not fundamnetals.
Loston played raw, and he had to make up ground on both points, along with overcome injuries.
But, Loston's ability in coverage and run support are supreme. Again, no sleight to Reid, but Reid received top-flight coaching in HS, and Loston did not.
Just an FYI, Collins was at Dutchtown with Reid & Carrier for the first two years of his career, as well. Carrier's at Zachary HS now, I believe, and not doubting Collins' ability or play one bit, but coaching makes a difference, especially early.
Just trying to bring some context to the discussion.

Pro-LSU! Nice article. Thanks for sharing.

Very true, that, I was there too.
Aren't Claibourne & Loston both going to be RS Soph's. I know Poppa got a RS his first year with the thumb injury. Don't remember MC17 playing as a freshman.

"DB U could switch over to Alabama in a few years"????? LSU has more young talent than Bama. And to talk about LSU DB success due to Saban is bs. Saban hadn't been at LSU in six years but he still had to bring him up.

Loston passed Reid up this spring for the starting spot. Reid had a better grasp of the defense than Loston, but Loston has finally caught on. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the Bash Brothers (Reid & Loston) crushing some rbs and wrs.

Sure. The media has to say his name or write his name so they can jizz themselves. He is great but very overhyped as a db coach. I cant think of anyone other than CW13 that has been a good pro after being coached by saban at db. One of the biggest myths in CFB.
