The only way any of this makes sense to me...
Alleva realizes he's made a huge mistake with O. Now he's in damage control.
He allows O to choose his staff and run his program so that if/when it fails, O can't say the administration held him back.
He also agrees with the in house promotions hoping they will keep LSU (fairly) steady. He doesn't have to deal with another coaching search and it allows some stability to the program.
In a year or two, depending on how things work out, a new coach comes in and cleans house. LSU isn't dealing with turning over a fairly new staff, they have potentially smaller buyouts and if he feels loyalty towards any of these coaches he will have given them all their chance.
Aranda has been retained at all costs because his defense is holding things together and with the thought that he might be the next head coach. Assuming he didn't get it, he'd likely move on to another school/NFL or the new head coach would try to keep him. Another massive buyout averted?

By the time we get this all figured out, Saban will be retired with 3 more National Championships under his belt. Then at least we won't have to worry about Nicky!!
