Sure, there have been in-game adjustments, yet when the game gets down to when it matters, it does not matter if He is coaching in Orange of Tenn or Purple and Gold of LSU, his philosophy is identical...

and Third and Chavis is highly-accurate as a description of his philosophy.

Furthermore, the exection to this is when he has future All-Pro caliber personnel on the field.

Give him an average roster, and he is nothing special at all.

So what makes Chief special?

Is it him?

is it the massive number of Pro-caliber players he had in his hay day at Tenn and LSU?

Is he special at all, or is the truth of the matter that he is just average overall, and not special at all?

Most importantly, at his stage of the game, can he and will he adjust?

If you think he is special, don't you think special coaching could take lesser talented teams and do something special with them?

When has he done so?

Everyone can change.

The game is certainly passing him by though.

Nope. Doing the exact same thing he always did at Tennessee. They were thrilled to get rid of him as should we.

NO and neither will Miles

With the lack of playing time for Jennings, the upside next year is probably 8 -4 with a greater downside floor close to 6 -6.

NO,
go back and read his history at Tenn..

Chavis starts HOT and it all goes down hill..
he is in part responsible for Fulmer's departure from TN.

Following the national championship season of 1998, Chavis was named the SEC's outstanding linebacker coach. Tennessee's defense led the SEC in 1996 and ranked in the top three five of the past seven years.

In addition to supervising linebackers and the overall defense, Chavis in 1999 was named assistant head coach.

Following the 2006 season, Chavis was named as the Assistant Football Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association.[3]

Chavis and other members of the staff have seen increased pressure after a slow start to the 2007 season, including double-digit losses to California and Florida.

Chavis's career at Tennessee came to an end in the middle of the 2008 season. Following a 3-6 start and a blowout loss to Steve Spurrier and South Carolina, Phillip Fulmer announced the following Monday that he, at the University's decision, would step down as head coach. Fulmer's resignation would ultimately oust Chavis as defensive coordinator. Chavis's final three games would bring confidence but major disappointment to his final days with UT, starting with an embarrassing 13-7 loss to Wyoming which would keep UT from making a bowl for the second time in four years. Chavis would win his final game at UT against the University of Kentucky, 28-10, continuing a 24 game win streak against the Wildcats.

Not much. Just ask some Tennessee fans.

the problem is his D needs an elite DL to be successful, we don't have that this year (though the lack of any kind of rotation has been maddening) and he needs to adjust because this shite isn't working at all.

personnel decisions this year have also been highly questionable

I think Welter playing goes beyond the point of being questionable

Why would we want Chavis to change? Did you not watch last years A&M game?

+1

also Chavis' D is not really aggressive, he has been blessed with some aggressive players, making his D appear aggressive. He will interject a little aggressiveness every now and then, but not his nature....
specially on 3rd downs and/or close games

yeah welter is the big one, there's also some in the defensive backfield, no rotation along the DL, etc.

the main point is that it is NOT Chief that is special, but the caliber/speed of the defensive personnel he has been blessed to have when he was deemed special.

The TAMU game had an overwhelming amount of speed and talent, so we shut down TAMU. It is likely that any DC with the talent we possessed would have done well.

But, when you do not have special talent, then that is when you find out how good your coach really is. We have such a situation now, and this it the first time the talent level on the defensive side of the ball has dipped below special to average SINCE Chief's last few years at Tenn.

And so this is the time when we can make an accurate assessment of Chief. LSU's defense is very non-special when the talent is average, so there is ZERO evidence that Chief is a special mind and coach, and in fact, whenever the opposing team has the ball on the last drive and the game is on the line, it is far more likely that his schemes will proved inadequate than otherwise.

I bet the vast majority of fans and even players lacked confidence that we could stop Ole Miss, just as we saw several times with Chief.

I was hoping someone would be able to offer something that made sense as to why and how Chief was special, and no one has.

Disappointing to say the least.

He's had a talented experienced D made him look good the last two seasons. Now that there gone you really see how effective his schemes are. Really not much difference between him and Pelini's depending on the DLine most times to get pressure. And running a Tampa 2 styled coverage in secondary. I like attacking styled D's with man to man coverage. Go and get the QB in anyway with disguised blitzes. Do not give him time to do shite.

There is no logical flow chart that can lead the defensive woes of this season directly to chief. The only thing i disagree with on his strategy is to not rush qbs that have big arms. The dual threat types he rushes and gets to, the big arm guys get all day to pick us apart. Can't see why.

Other than that chief is awesome and we are lucky to have him.

This is the same defensive scheme we had in 2011 and 2012. The defense is young in the secondary and lacks playmakers in the front seven. If we had potential seniors minter, mingo, montgomery, mathieu, simon and reid on this squad,,,,Do u really believe this defense would suck...

No I do not. You are missing the point. The point is that we cannot sustain such ridiculous talent levels, so it is important that we have good coaching when the talent inevitably drops, and Chief seems to be average when he has average talent, ergo, there is NO evidence that Chief himself is special as many claim he is.

Chief doesn't make adjustments. Ever. See the A&M game last season as evidence.
